IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how sugar canes are harvested to manufacture sugar.
Overall, it is clear that the whole process initiates from growing sugarcane, following by several stages to get clarified sugar and ending at drying and cooling of sugar for storage.
Initially, farmers grow sugarcanes in farm lands, which constitues around 12 to 18 month in total.Once this occurs, it is followed by harvesting, through two different ways it can be achieved . First, is utilizing maual labour to cut the sugar canes stems and bottom leaves using a sickel .Second,is use of man-made machine to efficently complete the process.Although both of processes utimately tead to almost similar results.
This marks the beginning of next stage, where they are passed through heavy machine to obtain the juice for later purification through limestone filter . Evaporators, generally a furnace with source of heat at bottom, heats with the purified liquied to separate sugar contents and water from the mixture through evaporation .As syrup and sugar crystals are left behind for final process it is pored into a centrifuge machine to separate crystals of sugar and syrup.Subsequently, leadsing to purified and clear sugar cystal for further drying and cooling in large containers for storage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and outlining the main stages of the sugar cane manufacturing process. It clearly highlights the progression from growing and harvesting, through crushing, purification, evaporation, and centrifugation, down to the final drying and cooling. While the overall process is adequately covered, some parts are slightly more developed than others. For instance, the description of harvesting goes into notable detail regarding manual versus mechanical methods, whereas later stages like evaporation and centrifugation are described more briefly. To reach a higher band, the report would need to ensure a more balanced and extended coverage across every single stage of the diagram without uneven development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, moving from the beginning of the process to the end. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction from the body of the process. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen with phrases like 'following by several stages' and transitional errors such as 'Subsequently, leadsing to purified...'. Referencing and logical connectors between sentences occasionally feel abrupt, meaning the progression is not entirely smooth throughout. To achieve higher marks, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally without awkward linking errors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less-common items relevant to industrial processes, such as 'purification', 'evaporation', 'centrifuge', and 'crystals'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-form errors that detract from precision, including 'constitues', 'maual', 'sickel', 'efficently', 'utimately', 'tead', 'liquied', 'pored', 'leadsing', and 'cystal'. Although these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the lexical score from rising into the higher bands. A greater focus on accurate spelling and correct word forms of technical terms is necessary to improve this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses ('which constitues around 12 to 18 month') and conditional or concessive structures ('Although both of processes utimately tead...'). However, there are numerous grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, plurals ('month' instead of months, 'both of processes'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing that affect readability. Punctuation and word boundary errors also occur frequently ('First,is', 'Second,is'). Because these errors persist throughout the text and require some effort to decode, the grammar sits firmly within the mid-range level. More careful proofreading of complex sentences would yield error-free structures.
