How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of making sugar from its raw state to its consumable state.

Overall, this process includes various steps from growing sugar canes to final step of crystallization.

The procees starts from growing the sugar canes in farms and agricultural lands. The duration to grow a fully acceptable sugar canes for further process takes around 12-18 months. Then comes the next stage of harvesting, in which it is harvested by machines or by humans. After that, the next step is crushing. During this stage, the sugar canes are crushed into a machine which then produces raw juice. fourth stages is purification. filters such as limestone is used to purify the juice extracted before.

The fifth stage of the process is evaporation in which the juice is heated in a container to remove any impurities and to transform the juice into a syurp. After this, the centrifuge process takes place. This procedure helps in separating the sugar from crystals. The last step before it is consumable, drying and cooling is conducted to dry out any moisture to harden the crystals.

In short, the process is divided into 7 steps. Starting from growing, harvesting, crushing to purifying, evaporation, centifuge, and at last cooling and drying.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by covering the entire sugar manufacturing process from the initial growing stage to the final cooling and drying. An overview is successfully presented at the beginning and reinforced at the end, pointing out that there are seven distinct steps. However, some stages are more fully developed than others, and certain details are slightly repetitive or mechanical in their reporting. For instance, the transition sentences like 'Then comes the next stage of harvesting' and 'After that, the next step is crushing' lean on simplistic formatting rather than fully integrated descriptions. To reach a higher level, the response would need to better highlight the most significant overarching trends and comparisons in the process, rather than simply listing every sequential phase step-by-step.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is used logically to group the introduction, the middle steps, and the conclusion. However, cohesion is at times somewhat mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on consecutive transitional phrases like 'Then comes', 'After that', and 'The fifth stage'. Referencing is generally clear, but the linkage between sentences could be smoother and more varied. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices and adverbial phrases to connect the stages more naturally, reducing reliance on formulaic sequencing words.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic steps of the diagram using words such as 'cultivation', 'crushing', 'purification', 'evaporation', and 'centrifuge'. There are, however, a few spelling and word-form errors, such as 'procees' instead of 'process', 'syurp' instead of 'syrup', and 'centifuge' instead of 'centrifuge'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but these minor lexical inaccuracies and occasional awkward word choices, such as 'fully acceptable sugar canes', demonstrate the limitations of this band level. To achieve a higher band score, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items and ensure complete accuracy in spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as 'The diagram illustrates the process of making sugar from its raw state to its consumable state.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'filters such as limestone is used' instead of 'are used' and article errors such as 'fourth stages is purification' instead of 'The fourth stage'. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and they rarely impede communication. To move up to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures and eliminate basic agreement and article mistakes to produce more error-free sentences.
