How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the sequential manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the multisatge process begins with the plantation and growing of sugar canes and concludes with the drying and cooling of moist sugar crystals to form sugar, while five steps serve as intermediate stages. Additonally, the process is combination of both traditional agricultural practices as well as advanced technical procedures.

The process starts with the planation of sugar canes, which require 12 to 18 months for proper growth. This is followed by harvesting of these either using tractor and harvesting machines or with hand-on methods without using any technology. After harvesting, sugar canes are crushed to extract juice, which is passed through limestone filters to purify it from impurities.

Afterwards, purified juice is heated in an evaporator to transform it into syrup. Then this syrup is centrifuged to separate crystals from liquified sugar. In the last stage of sugar formation, the drying and cooling of these crystals result into the formation of sugar, ready to dispatch to various stores.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear overview and outlining all the main stages of the sugar manufacturing process from growing to cooling. The progression is accurately reported, and appropriate comparisons are made, such as noting the dual methods of harvesting using either machinery or manual labour. While all stages are addressed, some details, such as the exact mechanism of the centrifuge, could be slightly more extended to reach the next tier of achievement. Nevertheless, the selection and reporting of main features meet the criteria well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information flows naturally from the beginning of the process to the final stage, aided by appropriate sequencing expressions such as 'The process starts with', 'This is followed by', 'Afterwards', and 'Then'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body steps. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, though a few transitions feel slightly mechanical, preventing the response from achieving a higher rating.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used to accomplish the task, including process-specific terms like 'evaporator', 'centrifuged', and 'limestone filters'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'multisatge' and 'planatation', but these contain spelling errors ('multistage', 'plantation'). Word choice is generally appropriate and sufficient for communication, though occasional lexical slips and minor inaccuracies prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with missing or incorrect articles (e.g., 'is combination of both', 'using tractor and harvesting machines') and minor prepositional or agreement slips (e.g., 'result into'). These errors do not impede communication and are characteristic of this level, where a few persistent mistakes remain alongside successful complex sentences.
