IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the sequential manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, the multistage process begins with the plantation and growing of sugar cane and concludes with the drying and cooling of moist sugar crystals to form sugar, while five steps serve as intermediate stages. Additionally, the process is a combination of both traditional agricultural practices and advanced technical procedures.
The process starts with the plantation of sugar cane, which requires 12 to 18 months for proper growth. This is followed by the harvesting of these either using tractors and harvesting machines or with manual methods without using any technology. After harvesting, sugar cane is crushed to extract juice, which is passed through limestone filters to purify it from impurities.
Afterwards, purified juice is heated in an evaporator to transform it into syrup. Then this syrup is centrifuged to separate crystals from liquefied sugar. In the last stage of sugar formation, the drying and cooling of these crystals result in the formation of sugar, ready to be dispatch to various stores.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the sugar manufacturing process from start to finish. The student accurately reports the main features and stages depicted in the diagram, ranging from the initial growing period of 12 to 18 months and dual harvesting methods to the final drying and cooling stage. Ideas are well-extended and supported with appropriate details drawn directly from the visual data, such as the use of limestone filters and the evaporator. While some minor details are briefly touched upon, the overall progression is fully covered, establishing a clear and logical summary that meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response demonstrates clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into a well-structured introduction, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs that trace the sequential steps of the manufacturing process. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'This is followed by', 'Afterwards', and 'Then' are used flexibly and effectively to guide the reader through the various stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the macro-level overview from the detailed process steps, ensuring the text flows smoothly from beginning to end without any noticeable disruption.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, demonstrating an awareness of appropriate academic style and collocation. Less common items such as 'sequential', 'multistage', 'intermediate', 'purify', and 'centrifuged' are integrated naturally into the text. Word choices are generally accurate, and phrases like 'traditional agricultural practices' and 'advanced technical procedures' show a strong ability to paraphrase the visual data. While there is a minor slip with 'dispatch' instead of 'dispatched', these occasional errors do not impede communication and allow the response to read fluently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response exhibits a good control of grammar and punctuation, featuring a variety of complex sentence structures alongside simpler forms. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as the opening complex structure 'The diagram illustrates the sequential manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.' Verb tenses and passive voice constructions are handled accurately when describing the technical steps, as seen in 'is passed through limestone filters' and 'is heated in an evaporator'. Punctuation is well managed, and although a minor preposition or article slip may occasionally persist, these do not interfere with readability or meaning.
