IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram ilustrates the production process of sugar from sugar canes.
Overall, there are 7 stages through which sugar is manufactured , starting from harvestig the sugar canes and finally drying and cooling it off at the end.It aslo includes two important stages of purifing the juice and separating it from other partciles to get refined sugar.
Firstly sugar canes are grown for about one and half year, after which they are harvested by the farmers or heavy machinery. After collecting the sugar canes they are crushed to take all the juice of it. Juice is then passes through thr limestone filter to purify it , preventing any other particles from passing by.
After being purified the juice heated in an evaporator so it becomes syrup, the syrup is then passed through a centrifuge , to separeate unrequired crystals. Lastly the contents are dries and cooled inorder to get sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of sugar production, from the initial growth period to the final cooling phase. An overview is provided, noting the total number of steps and highlighting key transformations like purification and crystallisation. However, certain parts of the response are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of stage two overlooks the dual methods of harvesting shown in the diagram, specifically omitting the distinction between manual labour and mechanical harvesters. While the general sequence is accurately reported, addressing all visual details more thoroughly would elevate this aspect of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The report demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction and overview from the body details. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'Firstly', 'After collecting', and 'Lastly'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly with transitions like 'It aslo includes' and minor punctuation slips near paragraph boundaries. To reach a higher standard, cohesive links could be integrated more fluidly without relying on standard sequential markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic steps of the process using terms like 'manufactured', 'evaporator', 'centrifuge', and 'crystals'. There are, nevertheless, several spelling errors and word-choice slips throughout the text, including 'ilustrates', 'harvestig', 'Aslo', 'purifing', 'partciles', 'dries', and 'inorder'. These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they reflect a limitation in precise control over word forms and spelling. Introducing less common vocabulary with greater accuracy and checking spelling would strengthen this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at multi-clause structures such as 'starting from harvestig the sugar canes and finally drying and cooling it off'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, including missing articles ('passes through thr limestone filter'), preposition errors ('take all the juice of it'), subject-verb agreement slips ('the juice heated'), and a run-on sentence in the first paragraph. These errors rarely impede overall communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher rating. Improving control over verb forms and prepositional patterns will enhance grammatical precision.
