IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given picture illusterates about production of sugar from sugar cane.
All procedure totally involves 7 steps that starts by the plantation of the sugar cane which includes giving decent amount of water and other resources to the plant.
After the growth of sugar cane harvesting season comes and it is cutted by means of different cutting machinery such as harvesters. And in next step it is crushed on large scale in factories and pulp is seperated from it .
3 step involves purification of the juice by help of specific type of filter known as limestone filterpaper. Than this liquid undergoes the eveporating machine which removes all the excessive water vapours and only thick sugar syrup remains behind.
Afterwards this thick syrup undergoes centrifugation method which involves removing sugar crystals from syrup. The last step of this workflow is drying and cooling of sugar which is still hot due to evaporation process. When dryer dries off sugar than pure cooled sugar is available for use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all key stages of the sugar manufacturing process from growing to cooling, thereby addressing all parts of the task. However, some aspects of the process are under-developed or lack precise detail. For instance, the description of the growing stage mentions giving 'decent amount of water and other resources', which is conversational rather than academic. Furthermore, the summary lacks a clear, cohesive overview statement outlining the main stages as a whole. While the mechanical and manual harvesting methods depicted in the diagram are mentioned, the explanation of the intermediate filtering and evaporation steps remains somewhat generalised, preventing the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows the chronological sequence of the diagram reasonably well. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct stages of the manufacturing process, such as the transition from extraction to purification and finally to centrifugation. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. The use of transitional markers like '3 step involves' and 'Than this liquid' creates awkward transitions between sentences. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and the mechanical linking prevents the progression from flowing naturally, which is characteristic of the level achieved.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'harvesting', 'crushing', 'purification', 'evaporating machine', and 'centrifugation'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that detract from the overall quality, including 'illusterates' instead of illustrates, 'cutted', 'seperated', 'eveporating', and 'limestone filterpaper'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are often marred by inappropriate word choice or minor morphological inaccuracies, though communication of the main processes is generally maintained without severe hindrance to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'When dryer dries off sugar than pure cooled sugar is available for use.' However, control over grammatical structures is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and punctuation, alongside awkward phrasing such as 'The given picture illusterates about' instead of illustrates the production. Complex sentence attempts frequently contain errors, including subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect clause structures like 'Than this liquid undergoes the eveporating machine which removes all the excessive water vapours'. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede the overall comprehension.
