IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The rendered diagram illustrates the procedure of making sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, seven separate methods displayed in the picture such as from harvesting sugar cane to industrial process of centrifuge.
Having a detailed look on the initial process of making sugar, it is crystal clear that growing phase of sugar cane crop is 12 to 18 months. Secondly, harvesting starts by both with mechines and manually. In the step three juice produced by squeazing sugar cane and then juice purified by the limestone filter.
Moving to the other segments of the diagram, it can be seen that purified sugar cane juice heated till it evaporates and become in the form of syrup. Now the syrup further processed to the centrifugal mechine. Furthermore, this centrifuge mechine separates sugar crystals from syrup. Finally, sugar available in the form of crystal cubes and then left for drying and cooling. Additionally, crushing sugar cane to process juice can be considered as game changing process in all stages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the key stages of the sugar manufacturing process, from the initial growing phase of 12 to 18 months through to the final drying and cooling of the sugar crystals. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting the seven distinct steps depicted in the diagram, and some comparisons and features are reported. However, certain parts of the response are slightly under-developed or touch upon details mechanically, such as the concluding remark that crushing is a 'game changing process', which introduces subjective commentary rather than objective reporting. To achieve a higher band, the description of each mechanical stage could be more fully integrated and expanded without personal evaluation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence mirroring the linear stages of the diagram, moving from growing and harvesting through to the centrifuge and cooling steps. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the process, such as 'Overall', 'Having a detailed look', and 'Moving to the other segments of the diagram'. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and paragraphing is slightly unrefined with several very short paragraphs. To progress further, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences and organise the body of the text into more cohesive, unified paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is demonstrated for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'harvesting', 'crushing', 'limestone filter', 'evaporator', 'centrifuge', and 'crystals'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, word-form, and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'mechines', 'squeazing', 'evaporates and become in the form of syrup', and 'mechine'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the mid-range for vocabulary, but to reach higher bands the student must eliminate spelling slips and use less common lexical items with greater precision and correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'it is crystal clear that growing phase...' and 'it can be seen that purified sugar cane juice heated...'. There are, however, some grammatical errors and missing articles or prepositions, such as 'growing phase' instead of 'the growing phase', 'juice produced by squeazing' lacking a passive verb form, and missing auxiliaries in dependent clauses. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting typical control at this level. To improve grammatically, the writer needs to enhance accuracy in verb formations, article usage, and sentence construction when attempting more complex syntactic structures.
