How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the main components and process of converting sugarcane into sugar.

Overall, the process consists of 7 main stages involving beginning with growing and harvesting, followed by extraction, purification and crystalization of the sugar. The entire manufacturing process includes both mechanical and chemical processes.

The process commences with growing sugarcane which usually take around 12-18 months. After matures, sugarcane are harvested either manually or mechanically with a harvester and goes through process of crushing, where sugarcanes are crushed to produce sugarcane juice. The produced juice undergoes the purification process by using limestone filter to remove impurities.

Furthermore, the filtered juice is heated in an evaporator, until juice turned into syrup. This acumulated syrup passes to centrifugation process where sugar crystals are seperated from syrup. Finally, the extracted sugar crystals after centrifugation goes for drying and cooling process through which we obtained refined sugar, which is ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the sugarcane manufacturing process from growing to drying and cooling. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, identifying the seven main stages and the combination of mechanical and chemical steps. The key features, such as harvesting methods, crushing, purification via a limestone filter, evaporation, and centrifugation, are accurately reported and appropriately sequenced. While the explanation covers the entire cycle well, some minor details could be slightly more extended to fully maximise the response, which places it at a solid level where all requirements of the prompt are competently met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The report demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the diagram. Cohesive devices such as 'After matures', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' are used to guide the reader through the stages, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, resulting in a coherent overall arrangement that is easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying process-specific terms such as 'harvested manually or mechanically', 'limestone filter', 'evaporator', and 'centrifugation'. There are occasional spelling errors and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'crystalization' instead of 'crystallization', 'After matures' instead of 'After maturing', and 'acumulated' instead of 'accumulated'. The student attempts less common vocabulary with mixed success, but these minor lexical slips do not impede communication, placing the performance comfortably within the competent range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over relative clauses and participial phrases. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, such as 'which usually take around' (subject-verb agreement), 'After matures, sugarcane are harvested' (missing subject and plural agreement), and missing articles like 'goes through process of crushing'. Complex structures are attempted, but frequent minor errors in grammar and article usage persist, keeping the accuracy level constrained while still allowing the overall meaning to remain clear.
