How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The process diagram illustrates the way of manufacturing sugar that we regularly consume, from sugar cane, through passing of several sequential stages.

Overall, the final sugar crystals are observed to come from 7 staged process, from that of growing sugar canes for over a year period, to its final drying and cooling at production facility. And the majority procedures can be seen to be machine driven.

Firstly, the sugar canes are grown on farms, for a period in between 12 to 18 months, once sugar canes gets ready so either by efforts of human labour or by harvesting tractors the sugar canes are than harvested. Later on, the harvested sugar cans are than passed by a grinding wheel, where the juice from cans is extracted out and is collected in the round container.

Further ahead, the collected sugar can juice is poured into the funnel like equipment, where the juice gets limestone filtered, and the purified juice than gets released in forms of drops.Post the process of filtering, the juice is then added into a massive evaporator, where it gets heated for a while, and gradually on heating some quntity of juice gets converted into gaseous vapours and releases out from container, leaving behind the thick syrup from that of juice. Subsequently, the syrup is then passed by a machine known as centrifuge, which simply rolls the syrup in circullar motion to seperate sugar crystals from syrup. Lastly, the sugar crystals are than poured into huge container, where it gets dryed and turns cool.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the main stages of the sugar manufacturing process, satisfying the core requirements of Task Achievement. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph, noting the total number of stages and the mechanical nature of the facility. The sequence is properly followed from growing and harvesting through to crushing, filtering, evaporation, centrifugation, and finally drying and cooling. While most steps are accurately reported and supported, a few details are slightly generalized or described in a somewhat conversational tone, such as 'funnel like equipment' and 'massive evaporator'. To reach a higher level, the description could maintain a more formal academic register throughout and integrate more precise technical vocabulary for the equipment shown in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout the seven-stage process. You effectively utilize sequencing devices and transitional phrases to guide the reader from one step to the next, such as 'Firstly', 'Later on', 'Further ahead', and 'Subsequently'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. However, some cohesive devices feel slightly repetitive or mechanical in their placement, and referencing between sentences could be smoother in places. To achieve a higher standard, you can vary your cohesive ties more flexibly and ensure that pronouns and demonstrative determiners link ideas seamlessly without relying heavily on temporal transition words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'manufacturing', 'centrifuge', and 'crystals'. However, there are notable vocabulary, spelling, and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'quntity' is misspelled, 'sugar cans' is a typo for sugar canes, and phrases like 'round container' or 'funnel like equipment' are overly simplistic. Additionally, collocation and word forms are occasionally awkward, such as 'majority procedures' instead of the majority of procedures, and 'dryed' instead of dried. To improve this criterion, focus on precision in spelling, accurate word forms, and deploying precise technical terms associated with industrial processes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. Frequent minor errors persist, particularly with articles, prepositional usage, and redundancy. Examples include 'from 7 staged process' (missing article), 'sugar canes are than harvested' (incorrect use of 'than' instead of 'then'), 'passed by a grinding wheel' (preposition choice), and 'in forms of drops'. Furthermore, awkward passive constructions and comma splices or run-on sentences appear in places. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from achieving greater accuracy. To advance, you need better control over complex structures, accurate preposition use, and careful proofreading to eliminate basic mechanical errors.
