How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates seven step linner process to make sugar from sugarcane.

Overall, The process go through multiple phases including agriculture phase, mechnical phase, chemical phase and finally as a result sugar is manufactured.

In the agriculture phase, farmers wait for around 12 to 18 months for the harvest of sugar cane to mature. Once it is matured the crop is harvested by machines and farmers alike. During the mechincal phase sugar cane is crused using a machine to release all of its juice. After the the juice is collected, a chemical process purify it in which juices is passed trough a limesotne filter.

This purified juice is them poured into big boilers. These boilers are then heated to evaporate unwanted subtance. Juice that is left behind in these boilers is reduced to a thick syrup. Addionally, to separate sugar crystals from the thick syrup, it is spun at very high speeds in the centrifuge. These seprated sugar crystals are then finally dired and cooled to make sugar which is distributed all over the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the linear manufacturing process and reporting the main stages from growing and harvesting to drying and cooling. The overall trend and sequence are accurately captured. For example, the student correctly outlines the agricultural phase, the mechanical crushing, the limestone filtration, the evaporation into syrup, and the final separation of sugar crystals using a centrifuge. However, the explanation shows a slight tendency to over-generalize or include minor outside assumptions, such as stating that the final sugar 'is distributed all over the country,' which is not depicted in the diagram. To achieve a higher band, the response would need to maintain strict adherence only to the provided visual information without introducing unillustrated details while extending the mechanical description even further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout the description of the seven-step process. Information is grouped appropriately into paragraphs representing the distinct phases of production. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'Once it is matured,' 'During the mechincal phase,' 'After the the juice is collected,' and 'Additionally.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, agricultural phase, chemical phase, and final processing steps. To move to a higher band, the use of cohesive devices could be made slightly more sophisticated and varied, avoiding any mechanical transitions, and ensuring that referencing between sentences is consistently smooth and error-free.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the process, such as 'agricultural phase,' 'limestone filter,' 'evaporate,' 'thick syrup,' and 'centrifuge.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'linner' instead of 'linear,' 'mechnical' and 'mechincal' instead of 'mechanical,' 'crused' instead of 'crushed,' 'trough' instead of 'through,' 'limesotne' instead of 'limestone,' 'subtance' instead of 'substance,' 'Addionally' instead of 'Additionally,' 'seprated' instead of 'separated,' and 'dired' instead of 'dried.' These errors demonstrate limited control over word formation and spelling, which occasionally impedes the flow of communication and restricts the lexical score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use subordinate clauses and varied structures, such as 'Once it is matured the crop is harvested...' and 'In the agriculture phase, farmers wait for around 12 to 18 months...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns present, including missing articles and pluralization issues ('seven step linner process,' 'The process go through,' 'juices is passed,' 'them poured' instead of 'then poured'), preposition errors ('in which juices is passed'), and typographical slip-ups. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning of the process, they occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band. Greater accuracy in verb-subject agreement and article usage is required.
