Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This diagram shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane . It is a type of cycle that shows the steps of the process on how sugar is produced from sugar cane .
First step, shows that the sugar cane grows in 12-18 months in the field . After growing , farmer start harvesting of it. Farmers can harvest it in different ways like with hand cutting or with machines . Next step after harvesting is to crush the sugar canes and start purifying them with limestone filter .
When farmers done with purifying they start to make from the juice with the help of heating process . After this step , they centrifuge it which means to separate sugar crystals from syrup and after this step they can dry that crystals which they seperate from the syrup . The last step of this process is to drying those crystals and keep them in cooling area can make sugar perfectly .
At the end , these are the 7 steps for the process of producing sugar from the sugar cane .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages in the correct order, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, heating, centrifuging, and drying/cooling. The explanation of centrifuging is especially useful because it identifies the separation of sugar crystals from syrup. However, some stages are less fully described: the diagram shows juice becoming syrup in the evaporator, but this change is not stated clearly, and the final product is not explicitly identified as sugar. Calling the process a “cycle” is also inaccurate, as the diagram presents a linear sequence. A clearer overview of the process’s start, transformation, and end would make the summary more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally clear sequence, supported by transitions such as “First step,” “Next step,” “After this step,” and “At the end.” The reader can follow the production stages from growing to drying and cooling, and the ideas are grouped into paragraphs. However, the repeated step-by-step transitions make the progression somewhat mechanical, and the final sentence repeats the idea that there are seven steps rather than adding a useful concluding overview. Some references are also unclear: “them” in “crush the sugar canes and start purifying them” could refer to the canes, although it is the juice that is purified. Use more precise links between stages and organise the description around the initial, processing, and final stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “limestone filter,” “centrifuge,” “sugar crystals,” and “syrup.” These terms help communicate the main operations, and the explanation of what the centrifuge does shows an attempt to use precise language. Some choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, such as “make from the juice,” “dry that crystals,” and “keep them in cooling area.” “Cycle” also mislabels the process. Aim for standard process-description phrases, for example, “the juice is heated to form syrup” and “the crystals are dried and cooled.” Check word forms and spelling, including “separate,” to make the description more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the sequence is usually understandable. However, some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “First step, shows that…” lacks a clear subject, while “After growing, farmer start harvesting of it” has problems with articles, agreement, and sentence structure. In “When farmers done with purifying,” the verb phrase is incomplete, and “the last step … is to drying” uses an incorrect infinitive form. There are also punctuation and spacing problems, including spaces before full stops. Practise complete clauses and accurate verb patterns, such as “After the cane has grown, it is harvested” and “The final stage is drying and cooling the crystals.”
