IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of making sugar from sugar cane. Overall, seven steps are involved in the manufacturing process.
Initially, sugarcane is being planted in suitable season and left to be harvested till it matures commencing the first step of the process, generally it takes about 12-18 months for sugarcane to mature and be harvested. After the sugarcane matures, it is harvested by manual labor or harvestors in large areas. This harvested sugarcanes are sent to the crusher in order to extract the sugarcane juice marking the end of step three.
The acquired juice from the sugarcanes is then purified from any impurities by passing it through a limestone filter. This purified juice is then boiled in the evaporator to which leads to the formation of syrup.
The syrup obtained from the evaporator is the passed through a centrifuge device where the sugar crystals present in the syrup are being separated. Following that, sugar crystals are then stored where it is dried and cooled marking the end of steps involved in the manufacture of sugar from sugar cane.
To summarise all the points, sugar manufacturing from sugar cane may follow a simple procedure but it required skilled personnel from growing sugar cane to storing the sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence and give a clear overview that there are seven stages. The account accurately includes the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation into syrup, centrifuging and final drying and cooling. This makes the response relevant and informative. However, some details are less fully or precisely reported: the final stage is described as sugar being “stored,” whereas the diagram shows it being dried and cooled, and the concluding claim that the process requires “skilled personnel” is not supported by the visual. To strengthen the response, keep the overview focused on the process’s key transformations and report the final output without adding assumptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a generally logical order, moving from cultivation through processing to the finished sugar, and paragraph breaks help separate the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After,” “then,” and “Following that” make the progression easy to follow. This is a coherent overall account. At times, however, the linking is mechanical or the references are imprecise: “This harvested sugarcanes” does not clearly connect the plural material to the next action, while “To summarise all the points” introduces a conclusion that largely repeats the overview and adds an unsupported comment. Grouping the stages into clearer phases and using concise links between them would make cohesion more flexible and the ending more purposeful.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” “centrifuge,” and “sugar crystals,” which helps convey the technical stages. There are also useful alternatives such as “harvested” and “purified.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a process description, however: “planted in suitable season,” “harvestors,” “acquired juice,” and “stored” do not express the diagram’s information as naturally or accurately as they could. “Manufacturing process” is also repeated several times. Aim for precise process collocations and avoid adding wording that implies unsupported details; this will make the vocabulary more flexible and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including time clauses such as “After the sugarcane matures” and a relative clause in “where the sugar crystals … are being separated.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “which leads to the formation” should be “which leads” only if the clause has a clear subject; here, “to which leads” is faulty. “This harvested sugarcanes are sent” has a demonstrative–noun agreement problem, and “the syrup … is the passed” contains an incorrect form. There are also tense and article issues in “is being planted” and “in suitable season.” Review agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries, while keeping the useful range of structures.
