Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates about a manufacturing process making sugar from sugar cane.I wil discuss making sugar from sugar canes.

First of all is required a growing sugar canes than next process on rhe work. Sugar canes grow in a 12 to 18 months and than for harvesting either farmers work or machines do. After harvesting sugar canes put on the machine and than to take out juice and than the juice is purified in limestone filter.

After purifying the juice is heated So that it evaporates and turns into real syrup and than separate sugar crystals from syrup. After centrifuge drying and cooling sugar. At the end the process is completed and sugar is ready.

In conclusion, sugar process is started growing the sugar canes than harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporator, centrifuge and than drying and cooling sugar. This process is very hard but correct.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main stages in the correct order, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. However, the report is only 144 words, below the required 150, and the overview is largely repeated as a conclusion rather than clearly summarising the process’s main features. Some details are unclear or incomplete: for example, “than separate sugar crystals from syrup” does not explain that the centrifuge performs this separation, and the final stage is described only as “drying and cooling sugar.” The comment that the process is “very hard but correct” is unsupported and not relevant to describing the diagram. Add a concise overview and explain the key transformations more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph covering the early stages, a paragraph for later stages, and a concluding summary. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and time and sequence markers such as “First of all,” “After harvesting,” and “At the end” help guide the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because “than” and “and than” are repeated, and several stages are joined into long chains rather than clearly separated. The conclusion also repeats the process list without adding a distinct overview. Grouping the stages into clearer sentences and using references such as “this juice” or “the resulting syrup” would make the progression smoother and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “limestone filter,” “evaporates,” “syrup,” “centrifuge,” and “crystals,” which allows the reader to recognise most stages. The range is nevertheless limited, and some word choices or combinations are imprecise, such as “real syrup,” “put on the machine,” and “farmers work or machines do.” “Sugar canes” is also repeated frequently, while “sugar cane” or “the cane” would be more natural in this context. There are noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “wil” and “rhe,” which reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of process verbs and nouns, and use them consistently to describe what enters each machine and what comes out.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer sentences to connect stages, but control is limited and many sentences contain errors in structure, tense, articles, or punctuation. For example, “First of all is required a growing sugar canes” has an unclear construction, while “Sugar canes grow in a 12 to 18 months” has problems with the article and time expression. In “After centrifuge drying and cooling sugar,” the relationship between the stages is not expressed with a complete sentence. Missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent sentence boundaries also affect readability. Use straightforward passive forms suited to a process, such as “The cane is crushed” and “The juice is heated,” then check articles, verb forms, and punctuation. More accurate simple sentences should come before adding complex structures.
