IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The picture provides detailed account about the procedure in which sugar is produced after it is successfully harvested.Overall, the production of sugar takes place in seven simple steps.
Initially the process commences with the plantation of sugarcane saplings waiting for for the proper time to harvest. After attaining maturity, it is harvested either by manual labour or mechanical equipments.
The harvested sugarcane is then sent into the crusher leading to the extraction of juice and leaving molasses in the process marking the conclusion of step three. After the successful extraction,it is filtered with the help of limestone filter in order to get rid of any type of impurities present in it. Equipments such as evaporators are being used to boil the juice in order to attain syrup.
The attained syrup is then sent into the device named centrifuge which works on the principle of centrifugal force required for the seperation of sugar crystals from syrup. This sugar crystals or sugar is then send top respective storage units where they are subjected to drying and cooling marking the end of the entire manufacturing process of sugar from sugarcane.
In conclusion, production of sugar is time consuming and labour oriented process despite the nature of the process of being simple.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the main sequence and gives a clear overview that sugar production has seven stages. It accurately describes harvesting by hand or machine, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. This range of relevant detail meets the task well. However, some points are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram specifies that growing takes 12–18 months, which is omitted, and the claim that crushing leaves “molasses” is not shown. The final comment that the process is “labour oriented” is also not clearly supported, since the diagram presents both manual and mechanical harvesting. Including the growing duration and avoiding unsupported details would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is arranged in a clear chronological progression, and paragraphing separates the overview from the stage-by-stage account. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After,” and “The harvested sugarcane is then” help the reader follow the process. The final sentence also signals closure. Cohesion is generally effective, though some links are slightly mechanical or unclear: “After the successful extraction” repeats information already conveyed, while “This sugar crystals or sugar” makes the reference to the product difficult to follow. The overview could also identify the process as beginning with growing and ending with drying and cooling, rather than simply stating the number of steps. More concise transitions and clearer referencing would strengthen the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “extraction,” “filtered,” “evaporators,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” and these terms generally communicate the stages clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “marking the conclusion” and “manufacturing process.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “plantation of sugarcane saplings,” “mechanical equipments,” “attaining maturity,” and “respective storage units” do not describe the diagram naturally. “Molasses” is an unsupported product, and “labour oriented” is an imprecise characterization. Spelling slips such as “seperation” also reduce accuracy. Prefer direct process language and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the device named centrifuge which works on the principle…” and the purpose clause “in order to get rid of…”. Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems persist. For example, “provides detailed account” needs an article, “waiting for for the proper time” repeats a preposition, and “This sugar crystals… is then send” has problems with number and verb form. The opening also runs words together after full stops, and several commas lack following spaces. Aim for accurate articles, agreement, and passive forms—for example, “The sugar crystals are then sent”—and proofread sentence boundaries.
