IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pictoral diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing sugar from sugar cane.
The first and most important part is to grow sugar canes. It takes approximately 12-18 months of time to grow and it is followed by harvesting which can be done in 2 ways. First by using the harvest tracktor which is more time and labor effecient and the second way is to do manually. This can be more time consuming and expensive.
The third step is to crush the sugar canes for the extraction of Juice which is then further purified with limestone filter. This is followed by boiling the juice in Evaporator so that the juice becomes syrup. Second last step of the process involves Centrifuge which means seperation of sugar crystals from syrup and lastly Drying and cooling of the Sugarr extracted from Centrifuge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover the main sequence from growing the cane through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. The 12–18-month growing period and the two harvesting methods are also reported accurately. However, the overview is not clearly separated from the stage-by-stage account, and some details are added that the diagram does not show: for example, that mechanical harvesting is more efficient or that manual harvesting is more expensive and time-consuming. The final stage is described as drying and cooling the sugar, but the account could clarify that the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup before this. The response is 12 words below the required minimum, which limits how fully the process can be described. Focus on diagram-supported facts and add a concise overview of the process’s start, end, and key transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and sequencing expressions such as “The third step,” “Second last step,” and “lastly” help the reader follow the process. The response also moves from cultivation and harvesting to processing without losing the overall sequence. To make the organisation clearer, use a distinct overview after the introduction, then group the stages into paragraphs—for example, cultivation and harvesting, followed by processing. Some links are mechanical or imprecise: “This is followed by” is repeated, while “which means” makes the centrifuge explanation feel like a side note. At this level, the overall progression is coherent, but clearer paragraphing and more varied, precise transitions would make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on step labels.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “extraction,” “purified,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the stages understandable. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “limestone filter” and “sugar crystals.” However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “harvest tracktor” is misspelled and not the natural name for the machine, “pictoral diagram” is misspelled, and “Sugarr extracted from Centrifuge” is unclear. “First and most important part” also adds an unsupported judgement rather than describing the process neutrally. These errors do not prevent understanding, but more accurate spelling, collocation, and consistent technical terms would improve precision. Prefer concise process language such as “the cane is harvested mechanically or by hand.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “which can be done in 2 ways” and the purpose/result construction “so that the juice becomes syrup.” Most relationships between stages remain clear. Some grammatical issues persist, however. The opening “The first and most important part is to grow sugar canes” is less suitable than a clear process description, and “It takes approximately 12-18 months of time to grow” is unnecessarily awkward. The sentence beginning “First by using…” is a fragment, while “the second way is to do manually” lacks a clear object. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Juice,” “Evaporator,” and “Sugarr.” Use complete sentences and consistent present-simple or passive constructions, such as “The cane is harvested either mechanically or by hand.”
