IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates us, about the overall manufacturing process of sugar from sugar cane.
By overview of diagram, it can be clearly stated that there is total 7 stages in the process of manufacturing of sugar. From growing of canes to harvesting period subsquently, crushing it through machinery afterwards purifying the juice by the help of limstone filter. In the next phase it goes through the process of heating with the help of evaporator by which juice becomes syrup so sugar crystals can be separated from that syrup and then ultimately drying and cooling the crystals happens by which sugar is obtained.
In the initial phase of process, crops of sugar canes are planted for period of (12-18 months). In second stage of the process harvesting of sugar canes are completed either through physical labour or with help of machinery. In the next stage, sugar canes are crushed through machines so we can extract juice out of it. In the 4th stage juice gets purified with the limestone filter so that all the bad particles will get seperated out of it. Afterwards with help of evaporator purifed juice can be converted into syrup by heating at high temperature. In the 6th stage of the process(Centrifuge) sugar crystals are seprated out of syrup and in the final stage of the process drying and cooling of the crystals are done and ultimatelu sugar is obtained

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the full sequence and gives a clear overview that the process has seven stages, from growing the cane to drying and cooling the crystals. It also includes the 12–18-month growing period and both harvesting methods, and correctly explains the main transformations from cane to juice, syrup and sugar. This meets the task well and shows some detail beyond a basic account. However, a few descriptions are imprecise: the evaporator heats the juice to make syrup, rather than heating it “by which” crystals are separated; separation occurs later in the centrifuge. The claim that the limestone filter removes “all the bad particles” is not specified by the diagram. More precise reporting of these stages would make the account more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a sensible order, with an overview followed by a description of the early and later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “In the initial phase,” “In the next stage,” and “In the final stage” help the reader follow the process. However, the overview is a long, crowded sentence, and the first paragraph contains an incomplete construction: “From growing of canes to harvesting period subsequently…” The repeated use of “stage” and “process,” together with several “so” and “by which” links, makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary the ways you connect steps—for example, explain the two harvesting methods in one sentence, then state that both lead to crushing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” so the stages are generally identifiable. It also attempts more specific terms such as “physical labour.” However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise: “manufacturing of sugar,” “crops of sugar canes are planted,” and “bad particles” do not sound natural or suitably precise for a process description. Spelling errors in “limstone,” “seperated,” “purifed,” “seprated,” and “ultimatelu” are noticeable. Aim for accurate, natural process language, such as “sugar cane is grown,” “the juice is filtered,” and “crystals are separated from the syrup.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts at complex sentences and passive constructions, including “sugar canes are crushed” and “sugar crystals are separated out of syrup,” but control is uneven. The opening, “The diagram illustrates us, about…,” is grammatically faulty, while “By overview of diagram” and “there is total 7 stages” show problems with articles and sentence structure. Some sentences also combine several steps without clear grammatical boundaries, particularly the long overview. Passive forms are sometimes used appropriately, but “drying and cooling of the crystals are done” is awkwardly constructed. Improve accuracy by using direct, complete sentences and checking articles, agreement and clause structure—for example, “Overall, the process consists of seven stages” and “The crystals are then dried and cooled.”
