IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the procedure of converting sugar cane into sugar .
Overall, the process consists of many steps in the production of sugar from sugar cane . first step is growing sugar cane on land which requires approximately 2 years .and the last stage is drying and cooling the sugar .
Initially, farmers grow sugar can on agricultural land which needs around 2 years to grow .After the proper growth the sugar cane is harvested with help of machines or labour . Subsequently ,sugar cane is crushed with the assistance of machine and the juice is separated from raw material .The juice is then purified with the support of limestone filter .
Eventually, the juice is then placed into a container which evalorated the juice and convert it into sticky syrup . Once this has been completed, its time to separate sugar from the syrup, called centrifuge. Process ends with drying and cooling the sugar .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing and harvesting through crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview identifies the beginning and end of the process, and you include the diagram’s two harvesting methods. However, some details are less fully reported: the growing period is given as “approximately 2 years” and “around 2 years,” whereas the diagram specifies 12–18 months. The description of the centrifuge also does not explain that it separates sugar crystals from the remaining syrup. Make the overview more informative by noting that this is a linear, multi-stage process and clarify the key transformation from cane juice to crystals and then finished sugar. These additions would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence and is divided into an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Subsequently,” and “Eventually” help the reader follow the process. However, some links are mechanical or awkward, particularly “Once this has been completed, its time to separate sugar from the syrup,” and the final stages would be clearer if each step were connected directly to the next. The overview also repeats the growing and final stages rather than summarising the process as a whole. Use consistent transitions and clearer references—for example, state that the purified juice is heated to form syrup, which is then centrifuged—so the progression feels smoother and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “purified,” “limestone filter,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the subject clear. There is also some variety in how you describe the stages. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “evalorated” is a misspelling, “container which evalorated the juice” gives the container an incorrect action, and “sticky syrup” is less suitable than a neutral process description. “Raw material” is also vague for the cane residue. Improve precision by using standard process terms such as “evaporated,” “heated,” “sugar crystals,” and “remaining syrup.” Check spelling and collocations carefully, as these errors reduce the accuracy and naturalness of otherwise relevant vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the overview and the sequence beginning “Once this has been completed.” The stages are generally understandable, and the main actions are conveyed. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “first step is growing” needs an article, and “which requires approximately 2 years” has an unclear reference; the cane, rather than the step, takes time to grow. In “the juice is then placed into a container which evalorated the juice,” the relative clause is not grammatically formed for the intended meaning. There are also inconsistent sentence openings and punctuation, including lower-case “first” after a full stop and spaces before punctuation. Use clear passive forms consistently, such as “The juice is heated in an evaporator,” and proofread articles, clauses, and sentence boundaries.
