The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, it consists of 7 main stages, beginning with the growing of sugar canes and ending with prepartion of sugar.
At the first stage, cultivation of crops that takes place 12-18 months for growth of sugar canes. After that period harvest the plants by using reqiured equipments thentransport the sugar canes through suitable vehicle. Next, crush the sugar canes using suitable machinary. Finally collect the juice that prepared through crushing of sugar canes.
In the next stage, purify the prepared juice by using limestone filter then we collect pure form of sugar cane juice. Subsequently, evapoate the juice by using evaporator as a result formation of syrup. Following this collect the formed syrup and make it centrifuge by this we can see the seperation of sugar crystals from syrup. Finally collect that crystals perform cooling and after dry the crystals. As a result formation of sugar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having seven stages and give a clear overall direction, from growing sugar cane to producing sugar. Most key stages are included, including harvesting, crushing, filtering, evaporation and centrifuging. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram does not show the canes being transported by a vehicle, and the final stage is drying and cooling, whereas you describe cooling before drying. The harvesting methods (mechanical and manual) are also not specified. The response is one word below the required 150 words, with nine words copied from the prompt excluded from the count. Develop the overview and report the diagram’s actual sequence and details more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a description of the stages in sequence. Sequencing expressions such as “At the first stage,” “In the next stage,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the transition from juice preparation to syrup and crystals is generally logical. This meets the requirement for coherent overall arrangement. However, the final paragraph becomes a long chain of actions joined mainly by “then,” “subsequently,” and “following this,” so the relationships between steps can feel mechanical. Some references, such as “that crystals,” are also unclear. Use clearer sentence boundaries and group related stages, while varying linking devices and making each reference explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “separation,” which allows you to describe the main stages. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “manufacturing process” and “formation.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “prepartion,” “reqiured,” “machinary,” “evapoate,” and “seperation.” Some word choices and collocations are awkward: “make it centrifuge” and “perform cooling” do not express the actions naturally, while “suitable vehicle” is unsupported by the diagram. Aim for accurate process verbs and natural combinations, such as “pass the juice through a filter” and “separate the crystals from the syrup.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence “it consists of 7 main stages” and the result clause “as a result formation of syrup.” The sequence is usually understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or faulty. For example, “cultivation of crops that takes place 12-18 months for growth” lacks a clear grammatical construction, and “After that period harvest the plants” has no explicit subject. The final sentence, “As a result formation of sugar,” is also a fragment. There are errors in verb forms and sentence boundaries, as in “make it centrifuge by this we can see.” Use complete clauses with a consistent present simple, and check articles, prepositions and punctuation when joining steps.
