The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufactuing in sugar from suger cane with seven steps.
Overall, the process of sugar can be make by several steps such as growing a sugar cane to drying and cooling after sugar appear this with step-by-step process.
Firstly, the sugar can be grown from 12 to 18 months after ready of crop it can harvesting through a meachines or cut by people. After that the sugar canes are processed trough the crushing method, sugar cane placed in a meachine and it appers to juice substance after that,
it will purified with limestone filter to avoid wastage of sugar cane.
Secondly, the purified process are placed in heat with a fire to the evaporator until the juice substance becomes to syrup. Like wise, the syrup source is moved to the centrifuge which suparates sugar crystals from a syrup. However, keeping in drying and cooling that substance can become a sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having seven stages and include several key details, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. This shows a relevant understanding of the diagram. However, the overview is unclear: “after sugar appear this with step-by-step process” does not clearly summarise the transformation from cane to sugar. Some descriptions are also inaccurate or imprecise. For example, the filter is said to “avoid wastage,” a purpose not shown, and the evaporator is described as being “with a fire” rather than using heat. Make the overview explicit and report only what the diagram shows, using precise descriptions of how the material changes at each stage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview, and two paragraphs that broadly follow the process from growing to the final product. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After that,” and “Secondly” help the reader follow the stages. However, progression is weakened by unclear links and awkward sentence boundaries. The first process paragraph ends with “after that,” before continuing on a new line, while “However” introduces the final stage even though no contrast is intended. The overview also repeats the idea of a step-by-step process without clearly stating the main transformation. Group the stages into a clear beginning-to-middle and middle-to-end sequence, and use linking words only when their meaning fits.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuge,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. However, the range and control are limited, and several word choices or forms make the description difficult to read. Examples include “manufactuing in sugar,” “suger,” “meachines,” “appers,” and “suparates.” Phrases such as “juice substance” and “syrup source” are also unnatural, while “avoid wastage” assigns an unsupported purpose to the filter. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling carefully. Reusing the diagram’s precise terms, such as “sugar cane juice” and “sugar crystals,” would make the account clearer and more appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, control of sentence structure and basic grammar is inconsistent, and complex attempts often become faulty. For example, “the process of sugar can be make” has an incorrect verb form, while “the purified process are placed in heat” has problems with the subject and verb agreement and the sentence structure. In “after ready of crop it can harvesting,” the clause is incomplete and the verb form is incorrect. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or unsuitable. Practise writing clear passive constructions for processes, such as “The cane is crushed” and “The juice is heated,” and check that each sentence has a complete subject and correctly formed verb.
