How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram represents the procedure of manufacturing sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the diagram shows all necessary steps during the manufacturing of sugar from sugar cane, such as, first growing sugar cane in the fields, second is cutting sugar cane, next crushing it, then let it purify, after purifing it passes through heat chamber and a rotatory motion process where a motor moves it in circular motion and in last it is dried through cooling to make it ready to export.

Growing a sugar cane crop can take 12 to 18 months period, after that it is harvesting process which can be done through two methods, one is labour, which is mostly done in areas where mainpower is cheaper, on the other hand it can be also done with machinery, which is fast and a relaible process. According to the diagram, next it is crushing to transform sugar cane into juice, which is then passes through the limestone filter to purify it.

After purification, next procedure is evaporation, in which juice become syrup through heat. Further, it passes from a rotatory motor to seperate sugar cane crystals from syrup. In last, those crystels are dried through cooling to make it ready for market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, separation, and drying. The overview also identifies the process as a sequence, and you correctly mention both harvesting methods and the limestone filter. This gives the response a solid account of the diagram. However, some details are unclear or go beyond the visual: the claim that manual harvesting is used where “mainpower is cheaper” is not shown, and “ready to export” or “ready for market” is not indicated. The centrifuge is described vaguely as a “rotatory motor”; explain that it separates sugar crystals from syrup. More precise reporting of the final stages would make the coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an opening, an overview, and paragraphs that follow the production stages. Linking expressions such as “after that,” “According to the diagram,” and “Further” help the reader follow the process. The overall progression is clear, though some connections are mechanical or awkward, particularly the overview’s long list of stages and “In last” in the final paragraph. The overview also repeats much of the stage-by-stage account rather than highlighting the process’s main features concisely. Grouping the growing and harvesting stages together, then the processing stages, and using clearer transitions between them would improve cohesion and make the paragraphing more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” and “syrup,” so the reader can understand the general sequence. There is also an attempt to use more specific terms, such as “rotatory motion.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “let it purify,” “rotatory motor,” and “mainpower” do not describe the diagram clearly, while “crystels” and “relaible” are misspelled. “Sugar cane crystals” is also imprecise because the diagram shows sugar crystals separated from syrup. Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling; a smaller set of precise vocabulary will communicate the stages more effectively than unusual but unsuitable wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences with clauses such as “Growing a sugar cane crop can take 12 to 18 months period, after that it is harvesting process…” This shows an effort to connect information, but some sentence structures are faulty and make the relationships less clear. For example, “which is then passes through” combines incompatible verb forms, and “juice become syrup” has a subject–verb agreement error. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in phrases such as “it is harvesting process” and “in last.” Use a clear subject and verb for each stage, and check tense and agreement. More controlled complex sentences would help you express the sequence accurately.
