How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the process involving numerous steps of sugar production from sugar cane.

Overall, it includes seven stages begining with the growing of sugar cane and ending with the drying and cooling of final product. The process invoves use of few equipments and devices, for instance, filter and crushing machine.

Firstly, the sugar canes are grown, which takes 12-18 months to grow enough followed by the harvesting of grown sugar canes. Sugar canes are harvested by the farmers which follows crushing of sugar cane using crushing machine. Sugar canes are crushed to collect its juice which is then allowed to pass through limestone purifier. Limestone filter purifies the sugar cane juice, which is then placed in the evaporater which evaporates the water with the help of heat. After evaporation, the juice transformed into syrup which is then centrifuge to separate sugar crystals from syrup. Lastly, the separated sugar crystals are dried and cooled.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence accurately, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview identifies the seven stages and the start and end points, which gives the reader a clear summary. However, some details are less fully reported: the diagram shows harvesting by both machine and hand, while you mention only farmers, and the final product is not explicitly identified as sugar. The explanation that heat evaporates water and that centrifuging separates crystals from syrup is relevant, but the process could be described more precisely at each stage. Including both harvesting methods and clarifying the output would make the coverage more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Firstly,” “After evaporation,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the process, and the order is generally logical. This already provides a coherent progression. Some linking is repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “which is then,” and several stages are packed into one long paragraph. The reference in “which follows crushing” is also slightly awkward because it is not immediately clear whether it refers to harvesting or the canes. Use a few more varied transitions and separate the overview from the detailed process more clearly to improve flow and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “limestone filter,” “evaporates,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” so the reader can understand the stages. There is some useful variation in describing the process, but word choice and spelling are not consistently controlled. “Equipments” is not normally pluralised, “evaporater” is misspelled, and “centrifuge” is used as a verb in “is then centrifuge.” The phrase “allowed to pass through limestone purifier” is also less natural than a precise description of filtration. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy and flexibility. Check technical terms and use natural process collocations, such as “is passed through a filter” and “is spun in a centrifuge.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including relative clauses such as “which takes 12–18 months” and “which is then placed in the evaporater.” The sequence is usually understandable, and the opening overview is clearly framed. However, some grammatical errors remain. In “it includes seven stages begining,” the participle should be “beginning”; “the juice transformed into syrup” needs a finite verb, such as “is transformed”; and “which follows crushing” has an unclear grammatical reference. There are also missing articles in phrases such as “using crushing machine” and “with the help of heat.” Aim to make each process step a complete, accurately formed sentence, while retaining the complex structures you already attempt.
