IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
the provided illustration outlines the process by which sugar is manufactured from sugarcane. Overall, it is a seven stage linear industrial process commencing with the growing and harvesting of sugarcane which is followed by extraction, purification and crystalization ending with the production of sugar.
To begin with, sugarcane grows in the fields for 12 to 18 months until it reaches full maturity. upon reaching maturity the crop is collected either manually bh farmers or mechanically by using a harvester. The harvested crop ( stalks of the sugar cane ) are passed through a crusher to extract raw sugarcane juice. This process is called extraction. This extracted raw juice undergoes a purification process and is passed through a limestone filter which removed all impurities.
Furthermore, the purified liquid is heated in an evaporator where excess water is removes and a concentrated syrup is left behind. This syrup is then passed on into a centrifuge where the sugar crystals and syrup are separated. Finally, the sugar crystals undergo a drying and cooling process after which they are packed and ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear overview of the seven-stage process and accurately identifies its main phases: growing and harvesting, juice extraction and purification, then crystal separation and drying. It includes the stated growing period and both harvesting methods, and describes the limestone filter, evaporator and centrifuge in the correct sequence. This coverage and relevant detail make the account clear and well supported. However, the final claim that the sugar is “packed and ready for distribution” is not shown in the diagram, so it adds an unsupported step. Also, the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup, but the response could describe this separation more precisely. Keep the account strictly to the illustrated stages and clarify the final separation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear progression, with an opening overview followed by two paragraphs that move through the stages in order. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the shift from cultivation to processing is logical. The overview also prepares the reader for the details that follow. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “process” and the transition “Furthermore” between stages that are simply sequential. The parenthetical phrase “(stalks of the sugar cane)” interrupts the flow, and the final sentence introduces packing without a diagram-based link. Use more precise stage-to-stage transitions and integrate clarifying details into the sentence structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The response uses a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufactured,” “extraction,” “purification,” “evaporator,” “concentrated syrup” and “centrifuge.” These terms help convey the technical sequence, and the writer shows some flexibility by describing both manual and mechanical harvesting. However, several word-form or spelling slips reduce precision, notably “crystalization” and “removes” in “excess water is removes.” “Raw sugarcane juice” is also less exact than simply “juice,” while “all impurities” overstates what the diagram specifies. The vocabulary is generally adequate and meaning remains clear, but more accurate spelling and restrained, diagram-specific wording would make the description more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence with “commencing with…” and the clause “where excess water is removes.” Most stages are expressed clearly, and the sequence is easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain, however: “the crop is collected either manually bh farmers” has a faulty phrase, “The harvested crop … are passed” has subject–verb disagreement, and “excess water is removes” uses an incorrect verb form. The opening “upon” after a full stop should also begin with a capital letter, and punctuation around “Furthermore” is inconsistent. These errors rarely prevent understanding, but careful proofreading of agreement, passive forms and sentence openings would improve accuracy.
