How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrate the precedure of making sugar from the plants of sugar cane.

Overall, diagrams show the entire process of making sugar from growing the sugar cane plants to drying and cooling sugar in a container. It involves seven major steps in the manufacturing of sugar.

Initially, the practice of growing sugar cane crops is initiated and it takes around 2 to 2.5 years. Following this, harvesting is carried out by the farmers using specific farming tools and vehicles. Later on juice is extracted from the harvested sugar canes with the help of a juicer, which seperates the pulp and the juice. Thereafter, juice is poured into a funnel with limestone filler inside it. It purifies the juice from impurities.

Subsequently, the pure juice is heated in a furnace at high temperature to evaporate the excessive water and it will make the juice in form of syrup. After the evaporator stage, syrup is poured onto a centrifuge, which seperates the crystals from syrup by rotating at high speed. Lastly, sugar is formed and stored into a cylindrical container for it to dry and cool. Thus, it is a complete procedure to make sugar from sugar cane plants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover the main sequence from cultivation through processing to drying and cooling, and your overview correctly identifies seven stages. However, some details are inaccurate or added without support: the cane grows for 12–18 months, not “2 to 2.5 years”; the diagram shows harvesting by machine or by hand, rather than specifically by farmers using tools and vehicles; and it does not show sugar being stored in a container. The crushing stage is also described as separating pulp from juice, which is not stated in the diagram. To strengthen the report, prioritise the labelled stages and accurately describe the limestone filter, evaporation into syrup, and centrifuge separation, without inventing equipment or outcomes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs that follow the process from growing to the final stage. Linking expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” “Subsequently,” and “Lastly” help the reader track the stages, and the overall progression is easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in sequencing. At times, however, the transitions feel mechanical, and repeated references to “the juice” and “the process” make the links less precise. The final sentence repeats the idea that the procedure is complete rather than adding information. Use a more concise conclusion or omit it, and vary references to the material being processed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “extracted,” “evaporate,” “centrifuge,” and “crystals,” which makes the stages generally understandable. There are also attempts at more technical description, such as “furnace” and “cylindrical container,” though these are not the terms or details shown in the diagram. Several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “precedure” and “seperates” are misspelled, “limestone filler” is an inaccurate label for the filter, and “juicer” is less suitable than “crusher” for the pictured machine. Phrases such as “the plants of sugar cane” and “make the juice in form of syrup” are also awkward. Aim for accurate process terms and natural collocations rather than adding unsupported technical detail.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses such as “which separates the crystals from syrup” and time clauses that help explain the sequence. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “the practice of growing sugar cane crops is initiated” is an awkward passive construction, while “it will make the juice in form of syrup” shifts tense and has an incomplete article pattern. “Sugar is formed and stored … for it to dry and cool” also creates an unclear reference and purpose relationship. Keep the process description consistently in the present simple, and check articles and sentence patterns when describing transformations, for example, “the juice becomes syrup.”
