How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the process of sugar production from sugar cane involving neumerous steps. Overall, it is a linear process begins with the growing of sugar cane and ends with the drying and cooling of final sugar crystals.

Firstly, sugar canes are grown, which takes 12-13 months to grow mature enough. Consequently, grown sugar canes are harvested either by manually or mechanically. In manual harvesting, workers cut the sugar canes by hands while in mechanical harvesting, a trucktor is used to harvest the grown sugar canes. Once the sugar canes are harvested, they are crushed using crushing machine to extract sugar cane juice. Sugar cane juice is passed through the limestone purifier, which removes impurities from the juice. The purified juice is placed in the evaporator to evaporate excess water from the juice. After evaporation, the juice is transformed into syrup, which is then centrifuge. Centriguge separrates sugar crystals from syrup by rapid spins. Lastly, the separated sugar crystals are dried and cooled.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages in the correct order and gives a clear overview: production begins with growing and ends with drying and cooling. It also includes the two harvesting methods and explains the key transformations from cane to juice, syrup and sugar crystals. However, some details are not fully accurate or precise: the diagram gives a growing period of 12–18 months, not 12–13, and the description of the limestone filter’s function is an inference rather than a labelled feature. The final stages are reported, but the centrifuge’s separation of crystals from syrup could be explained more clearly. To strengthen the response, report the stated time accurately and describe each stage closely in terms of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a clear sequence, and the overview followed by a chronological account makes the process easy to follow. Connectors such as “Firstly,” “Once,” “After evaporation” and “Lastly” help signal progression, while the contrast between manual and mechanical harvesting is relevant. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation and shows some flexibility in linking stages. However, nearly the whole process is presented in one long paragraph, and several transitions rely on the same time-sequencing pattern. The sentence beginning “After evaporation” also moves quickly through syrup formation and centrifuging. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and process details, and vary links to show cause and transformation as well as sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “extract,” “evaporator,” “syrup” and “sugar crystals.” These terms make the stages generally understandable, and there is an attempt to use more specific language such as “rapid spins.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “neumerous,” “trucktor,” “Centriguge” and “separrates” are misspelled, while “which is then centrifuge” uses the wrong form and “by hands” is an unnatural phrase. Some repetition of “sugar canes” and “juice” also limits flexibility. Check spelling carefully and learn accurate process collocations, such as “is processed in a centrifuge” and “cut by hand.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which removes impurities” and a passive construction in “are harvested.” Most stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening overview is missing a relative pronoun and auxiliary (“Overall, it is a linear process that begins…”), and “takes 12-13 months to grow mature enough” has an awkward clause structure. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “using crushing machine” and “sugar cane juice.” The sentence “which is then centrifuge” has an incorrect verb form, and “by hands” is not grammatically natural. Practise accurate passive forms and article use while retaining the range of sentence structures attempted here.
