How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

the diagram depicts, how sugar is produced from sugar cane.

Overall,it is a liner process consisting of five distinct stages beginning with the harvesting of a sugar cane and ending with drying and cooling of the sugar crytals. Throughout the process, the sugarcane undergoes several transformations before the sugaris obtained.

At the first stage of the process, sugar canes is planted into the soil. During this stage, it takes 12 -18 months until it grows and transform into mature crop. Once this step has been completed, the mature sugar cane is harvested to the next stage for further processing. In the following stage, the sugar is collected with the help of using hands or mechanically using machinery. Afterwards, it is transferred for further processing , during which it was crushed and transformed into juice . The juice then moves into filter clarifiers where the lime binds to organic impurities using filtration. The process then continues as purified juice is transferred into giant tank for evaporation . Subsequently, the juice became a syrup. Finally, The syrup is dropped into high-speed centrifugal machines containing perforated drums, resulting in separation of sugar crystal from syrup and was placed into container for drying and cooling and marking the completion of the entire process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from growing through processing to drying and cooling, and you include the 12–18-month growing period and both harvesting methods. The overview also identifies the process as linear and gives its broad beginning and end. However, it says there are “five distinct stages,” although the diagram shows seven, and it incorrectly describes the process as beginning with harvesting rather than growing. Some details are also added without support, such as lime binding to organic impurities and the syrup being placed in a container. To strengthen the response, report the seven stages accurately and focus on the diagram’s stated transformations: crushing produces juice, evaporation makes syrup, and centrifuging separates crystals from syrup.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “At the first stage,” “Once this step has been completed,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. However, the overview’s claim of five stages conflicts with the later account, and the harvesting stage is described twice in a way that makes the sequence less clear. Some links are mechanical or imprecise, including “Afterwards” and “The process then continues,” while the long final sentence combines centrifuging, separation, drying, and completion without clear boundaries. Grouping the stages into clearer paragraphs and using references that consistently identify each input and output would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “evaporation,” “syrup,” and “separation,” which helps describe the stages. There are also attempts at more technical wording, such as “filter clarifiers” and “centrifugal machines,” although these are not always accurate or necessary for this diagram. Some word choices and collocations are awkward: “harvested to the next stage,” “with the help of using hands,” and “marking the completion” do not express the process naturally. Spelling and spacing slips, including “crytals” and “sugaris,” also reduce accuracy. Prefer precise, straightforward terms from the diagram, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including time clauses such as “Once this step has been completed” and a relative clause in “machines containing perforated drums.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Agreement is inconsistent in “sugar canes is planted,” and tense shifts occur in “the juice became a syrup” and “it was crushed” within a present-tense process description. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “transferred into giant tank” and the capitalised “Finally” after a comma. The final sentence is overloaded, making its verb relationships unclear. Use the present simple consistently, check singular/plural agreement, and divide complex stages into shorter, controlled sentences.
