How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram demonstrate the manufacturing procedure for making sugar from sugar canes.

Overall, there are various steps for sugar is produced from sugar cane. It started from the growing stage of sugar canes and then included many other steps. Like harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporate and end with drying and cooling sugar.

In the first step, sugar canes grow for 12 to 18 months. After this time, sugar canes harvested by the farmers and then take these to crushing machines. By crushing the sugar canes, this machine gives us juice. This juice then pure into limestone filter for purifying juice. After that, this juice is converted into syrup by evaporator with the help of heat.

In next step, this syrup goes through centrifuge process. In this process, sugar crystal seprates from syrup. And then in the last step, all sugar put in a big pot for drying and cooling it. After drying and cooling, sugar is ready to distribute.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the process as a sequence, and the description of juice becoming syrup and crystals separating from syrup reflects key changes shown in the diagram. Some details are less fully reported: harvesting is shown as either mechanical or by hand, but you mention only farmers, and the limestone filter is not described as filtering the juice. The claim that sugar is put in a “big pot” and is ready to distribute is not supported by the visual. To strengthen the response, report both harvesting methods and keep the final-stage description closely tied to the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early stages and then the final stages. Sequencing expressions such as “In the first step,” “After that,” and “In next step” help the reader follow the process. This logical progression is effective, though some linking is mechanical and a few connections are unclear. For example, “And then in the last step” begins a sentence with a connector that could be integrated more smoothly, while “After this time” refers clearly to the growing period but the next action is compressed. Use a wider range of natural transitions and connect related actions within complete sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overview could summarise the process more precisely rather than listing stages in a fragment.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough process vocabulary to communicate the main stages, including “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge.” These terms show an attempt to use task-specific language, and most of the sequence remains understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “this juice then pure into” does not express filtration clearly, “a big pot” is not an appropriate description of the final equipment, and “ready to distribute” adds an unsupported idea. Spelling errors such as “seprates” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process verbs and standard collocations, for example “is filtered,” “is separated,” and “is dried and cooled.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, including “After this time, sugar canes harvested by the farmers and then take these to crushing machines.” However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent, and several errors make the writing less fluent. Examples include “The diagram demonstrate,” “there are various steps for sugar is produced,” and “sugar canes harvested,” where agreement, clause construction, or passive verb forms are faulty. The overview also ends with a fragment: “Like harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporate and end with drying and cooling sugar.” Work on forming complete sentences and using the passive consistently for a process: “The canes are harvested,” “the juice is purified,” and “the syrup is passed through a centrifuge.”
