Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram represents step by step manufacturing process of sugar. Process involves 7 steps in total including growth of suagr canes, harvesting, crushing, purifying juice, evaporation, centrifuge, drying and cooling. Sugar cane is used as raw material used for the production of sugar. It takes 12-18 months for sugar canes to grow fully. Once sugar cane is fully grown, it is harvested. Harvesting can be done by two methods. Sugar can can be harvested manually by farmers or automatically by using machines designed for this purpose. Tractors have better efficiency and provide more output in less time. After harvesting, sugar cane is crushed to obtain juice. The residue is separated and is disposed off. Juice extracted from crushing undergoes process of purification using lime stone filter. Impurities are removed and the juice is then transferred to evaporator. Heating is done in evaporator where the juice converts to syrup. Once syrup is formed, it is transferred to centrifuge. Prime purpose of centrifuge is to separate sugar crystals from syrup. After separation of sugar crystals from syrup, final step involves drying and cooling. Sugar crystals are obtained after drying and cooling process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the full sequence, from the 12–18-month growing period through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The two harvesting methods and the purpose of the centrifuge are also accurately reported. However, the response lacks a distinct overview that summarises the process as a whole—for example, that it is a linear, seven-stage process beginning with growing cane and ending with dried sugar. Some details are added without support from the diagram, such as tractors producing “more output in less time” and the residue being disposed of. Focus on the main stages and only include information shown; this would make the summary more consistently complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are presented in a sensible order, and sequencing phrases such as “Once sugar cane is fully grown,” “After harvesting,” and “After separation” help the reader follow the process. The response is coherent overall, but it is written as one continuous paragraph, so the overview and process details are not clearly distinguished. Some links also feel repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “After” and “Once.” Organise the response into a brief introduction and overview followed by a paragraph describing the stages, and vary the transitions or use clear referencing such as “the resulting juice” and “this syrup.” This would make progression smoother and cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “purification,” “evaporator,” “centrifuge,” and “sugar crystals,” which communicates the main steps clearly. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices: “manufacturing process of sugar” is less natural than “process of producing sugar,” and “Prime purpose” is not an appropriate collocation here. “Suagr” is misspelled, and “lime stone” should be written as “limestone.” The phrase “Sugar cane is used as raw material used” repeats the same word unnecessarily. Aim for precise, natural process descriptions and check spelling and collocations; this will strengthen the range you already demonstrate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, such as “Once sugar cane is fully grown, it is harvested” and “Heating is done in evaporator where the juice converts to syrup.” Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “Sugar cane is used as raw material used for the production” has a faulty repeated construction, while “Harvesting can be done by two methods” is followed by the agreement error “Sugar can can be harvested.” Articles are also missing in “in evaporator” and “using lime stone filter.” Use passive forms consistently when describing stages, and check articles, agreement, and sentence construction. Greater accuracy across these structures would make the process easier to read.
