How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates the manufacturing process for producing sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the procedure follows a linear, multi-stage sequence that begins with cuting and harvesting sugar cane when they grow. After this, sugar canes are crushed and it's juice is collected, in the last few stages it's juice is heated and crystals are form from syrup. At the end sugar is obtained.

In the initial stages, when the sugar cane grows in 12 to 18 month, then the farmers do it's harvesting and load it in truck. After that, they are send for crushing where the juice is extract from sugar cane and the juice is purified by using limestone filter. The juice is then pour is in a big cylinder and put it on heat so that it's water evaporates and juice becomes syrup.

In the remaining stages, the syrup is put in a centrifuge , it separate the sugar crystals from the syrup. In the final stage, the sugar is put in a lage pot for drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from cane growth through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation and centrifuging to drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the process as multi-stage and notes that heating turns the juice into syrup before crystals are formed. These features make the response relevant and broadly complete. Some details, however, are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram shows two harvesting methods, mechanical and manual, but your account refers only generally to farmers harvesting and adds that the cane is loaded into a truck, which is not shown. The final stage is described as a “large pot,” rather than a drying-and-cooling cylinder. To strengthen the response, report these visual details accurately and explain the separation of crystals from syrup more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early stages and then the remaining stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “After that,” “In the initial stages,” and “In the final stage” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent progression. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly the overview sentence beginning “After this” and continuing through several stages with repeated “and” clauses. The phrase “In the remaining stages” works as a transition, but the paragraph could connect the centrifuge and final drying stage more smoothly. Use a wider range of precise process links, and make sure each sentence presents one clear step or a closely related pair of steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “manufacturing process,” “crushed,” “purified,” “limestone filter,” “evaporates,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge.” This is enough to communicate the general sequence, but the range and precision are uneven. Some expressions are informal or imprecise for a process description, such as “big cylinder” and “large pot,” while “load it in truck” introduces a detail not supported by the diagram. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “cuting,” “lage,” and “crystals are form.” Aim for accurate technical nouns and verbs, and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the final equipment as a cylinder and use “separates” to state what the centrifuge does.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur often enough to make some parts awkward. Examples include “when they grow,” “in 12 to 18 month,” “they are send,” “the juice is extract,” and “the juice is then pour is in a big cylinder.” The overview also shifts between “sugar canes” and “it’s juice,” making the reference unclear. There are some longer sentences, but several are not controlled accurately, so aim first for clear, complete clauses. Practise passive forms for process stages (“is harvested,” “is extracted,” “is poured”) and check subject–verb agreement, articles and pronoun references before submitting.
