How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The picture demonstrate the production process of sugar from sugarcane.

Overall, the process consists of seven steps, beginning with growing and harvesting of sugar cane which goes through various mechanical process such as crushing and evaporating, ending with producing raw sugar.

Firstly, sugarcane is grown in the fields and takes 12 to 18 months to reach full maturity. once it is fully matured, the sugarcane is harvested using a specialized agriculture machine. The harvested sugarcane is crushed with the help of crushing machine and juice is extracted.

The extracted juice is purified with the help of limestone filter. After filtering the juice, the purified juice is than evaporated with the help of fire. consequently, converted into thick syrup. In the sixth stage, the syrup goes through centrifuge process in which sugar crystals got separated from remaining syrup.

Finally, after the drying and cooling of sugar crystals the sugar is produced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence and include the key growing period, the use of a limestone filter, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview also identifies seven stages and gives the process a clear beginning and end. This is a solid account, but some details are less fully reported: the diagram shows two harvesting methods—mechanical and manual—whereas you mention only a specialised machine. The overview’s phrase “raw sugar” is not specified in the visual, and “various mechanical process” is too broad to summarise the stages precisely. To strengthen the response, report both harvesting methods and describe the separation and final product without adding unsupported detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence, moving from an overview to the early stages, then purification and the final stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After filtering,” “In the sixth stage,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. Paragraphing is also appropriate for separating the overview from the detailed account. Some links are a little mechanical, however, and the transition from evaporation to syrup formation is not fully smooth: “consequently, converted into thick syrup” lacks a clear subject. You could improve the flow by linking related actions in complete sentences and varying the sequencing language, while keeping the stages in the same logical order.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “extracted,” “purified,” “evaporated,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the stages understandable. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “limestone filter” and “sugar crystals.” Some choices are imprecise or repetitive: “with the help of” appears more than once, “fire” is less suitable than a process term for the heat source, and “specialized agriculture machine” is awkward. “Raw sugar” also adds a product description not shown in the diagram. More precise collocations and varied verbs would make the account more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the time clause “once it is fully matured” and the relative clause “in which sugar crystals got separated.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. The opening “The picture demonstrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “once” should begin with a capital letter after the full stop. The phrase “consequently, converted into thick syrup” is a sentence fragment because it has no explicit subject and finite verb; “sugar crystals got separated” also uses an unsuitable tense for a general process. Review agreement, sentence boundaries, and consistent present simple passive forms, for example, “the crystals are separated.”
