IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram demonstrates the manufacturing process from sugar canes as an onset to produce sugar as an outcome by going through numerous stages.
At the onset, the sugar canes take atleast 12 to 18 months of duration to be well grown. Furthermore, the grown sugar canes proceed through harvesting process either by using tractor which makes work much efficient or by cutting manually. With the help of grinding machine, the uprooted sugar canes further crushes to propose juice from it. For removing dust and unwanted particles, limeshone filter is taken in use to purify the juice.
The obtained juice is further transfers to an evaporator which heats it up and completely turns it into syrup. Additionally, the sugar preserves in a syrup form separated through centrifuge machine. At last, the sugar as a crystals are obtained by drying and cooling it.
To sum up, this diagram provides whole overview of how sugar canes are transformed into sugar crystals with the help of several equiments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the main sequence from growing cane through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. It also includes the 12–18-month growing period and notes both mechanical and manual harvesting, so the key stages are recognisable. However, some details are unclear or not fully accurate: “uprooted” is not shown, and the centrifuge is described as separating sugar “preserves in a syrup form,” rather than separating sugar crystals from syrup. The final summary repeats the transformation but does not clearly highlight the process’s overall linear nature or the separation of crystals as a key feature. More precise reporting of what happens at the centrifuge would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and the paragraphing separates the early processing stages from the later ones. Sequencing expressions such as “At the onset,” “Furthermore,” and “At last” help the reader follow the process. The final “To sum up” sentence provides a closing overview, although it largely repeats the opening rather than adding a distinct summary. Some links feel mechanical or do not express the relationship clearly: “Additionally” does not explain how the centrifuge stage follows evaporation, and “The obtained juice” is an unclear reference. To strengthen progression, use direct stage-to-stage links such as “The purified juice is then heated…” and ensure each reference clearly identifies the material being processed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “purify,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which helps communicate the stages. The response also attempts more formal phrasing, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram. “Onset” is not suitable for the beginning of a process, “propose juice” does not convey that crushing extracts juice, and “limeshone” is misspelled. “Equiments” is also misspelled, while “sugar as a crystals” is an awkward phrase. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the general process, but more precise collocations and careful spelling would improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence describing the two harvesting methods and a purpose clause beginning “For removing…”. The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the obtained juice is further transfers” combines an incorrect verb form with an unnecessary passive construction; use “the juice is then transferred.” In “the sugar as a crystals are obtained,” the article and plural form do not agree. “The sugar canes further crushes” also has subject–verb agreement problems, and “take atleast 12 to 18 months of duration” is not a well-formed construction. Aim for accurate passive forms and agreement when describing each stage.
