How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing of sugar from sugarcane. It is a cyclical process, consistring of several steps from growing of sugarcane till the drying and cooling of sugar.

In initial step, growing of sugarcane takes about 12 to 18 months. When sugarcane is grow completely then it is harvested by farmers from the crop field via the tractor. As soon as harvesting is completed then it is brought to the machine for crushing. In crushing process, sugarcane is crushed and their juice is prepared. After crushing, sugarcane juice is purified through limestone filter.During filtration, all impurities and waste materials are seperated and filtered and then it is carried towards evaporation. In this process, juice is placed in an evaporator by applying heat untill and unless it becomes syrup. After the formation of syrup,it is proceeded to a centrifuge where sugar crystals are seperated from syrup. After centrifugation, the sugar crystals are dried and cooled in a equipment.

The whole process is carried out in a specific equipment for filtration, evaporation, centrifugation and dryer..

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from the 12–18-month growing period through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifugation, and final drying and cooling. You also include relevant details such as the limestone filter and heat being applied to make syrup. However, the overview calls the process “cyclical,” although the diagram shows a linear sequence with no return to an earlier stage. Some details are also less precise: harvesting is shown as either mechanical or by hand, rather than simply “via the tractor,” and the final product is sugar, not specifically sugar crystals alone. A more accurate overview and fuller reporting of the two harvesting methods would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are presented in a generally logical sequence, and time and sequence markers such as “In initial step,” “After crushing,” and “After the formation of syrup” help the reader follow the process. The response is arranged as one long paragraph, however, so the overview and the detailed stages are not clearly separated. Some linking phrases are repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “After” and “then.” The final sentence about equipment also repeats information without adding a clear concluding point. Grouping the introduction and overview separately from the process details, and varying transitions while keeping them precise, would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the stages understandable. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “impurities” and “evaporation.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “manufacturing of sugar,” “sugarcane is grow completely,” and “carried towards evaporation” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “consistring,” “seperated,” and “untill” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard process descriptions such as “sugar is produced,” “the cane has matured,” and “the juice is transferred to an evaporator,” while checking spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including time clauses such as “When sugarcane is grow completely” and a relative clause in “a centrifuge where sugar crystals are seperated from syrup.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “sugarcane is grow” has an incorrect verb form, “their juice” does not agree with the singular noun “sugarcane,” and “in a equipment” uses the wrong article. Several sentences also run together because spaces after full stops and commas are missing, and the final sentence ends with repeated punctuation. Review verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries; these corrections would make your varied structures more controlled.
