Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustartes the manufacturing process for obtain sugar from sugar cane. There are seven variuos methods for growing, harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporation, centrifugation and dryting process.
From 12 to 18 months, sugar cane is growing and then the next step harvester. Farmer and trucks were harvest the growing sugar cane. Furthermore, sugar cane is crushed the machine and then extract the juice. Next process, the extract juice is sent through limestone filter. After, purification the juice provide heat and then converted into syrup. Another following, the syrup was sent into centrifuge machine. This machine separates sugar crystals from syrup. After centrifugation, the next step purify sugar crystals was sent into the basket. Further process, the crystals was drying and cooling. There are seven steps for the main process sugar is obtained from sugar cane. And the process is continued fom sugar obtain.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the process as making sugar from sugar cane and include several key stages, including growing, crushing, filtering, evaporation and centrifugation. However, the account is incomplete and sometimes inaccurate: harvesting methods are not clearly described, and the final stage is described as sending crystals into a “basket” rather than drying and cooling them. The overview is also weak; “There are seven steps” counts the stages but does not summarise the process’s overall progression from cane to finished sugar. The response is 143 words, below the required 150. To improve, give a concise overview of the full sequence and accurately report the two harvesting methods and the final stage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in process order, and sequencing expressions such as “Next process,” “After,” and “Further process” help the reader follow the account. This provides some organisation, but the progression is weakened by repetitive transitions and unclear links between ideas. For example, “After, purification the juice provide heat” makes it difficult to understand how purification leads to heating, while “And the process is continued fom sugar obtain” does not add a clear concluding point. The response is also presented as one paragraph, so the stages are not visually grouped. Use a separate overview and a body paragraph, and connect each stage with accurate, varied transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “limestone filter,” “syrup,” “centrifuge,” and “sugar crystals,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices, forms, or spellings are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. Examples include “illustartes,” “variuos,” “dryting,” “extract juice,” and “purify sugar crystals.” “Farmer and trucks” also does not accurately name the two harvesting methods shown. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling and word forms; for instance, use “mechanical harvester” and “manual harvesting,” and describe the juice as being “filtered” before it is heated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to describe a sequence using both short statements and linked clauses, but grammatical control is inconsistent and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “sugar cane is crushed the machine” lacks the correct passive construction and preposition; “Farmer and trucks were harvest” has an incorrect verb form; and “the extract juice is sent” uses an incorrect adjective form. Agreement and tense are also problematic in “the crystals was drying and cooling.” Most sentences follow simple patterns, with limited accurate variation. Practise passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the cane is crushed by a machine,” and maintain consistent present-tense verbs and subject–verb agreement.
