How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of making sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, it is a time consuming and hard process consists of 7 basic stages from growing sugar cane to drying and cooling the sugar.

At first stage it takes 12 to 18 months to grow sugar cane. After that they harvest it using manual tools and then send it to a machine for further process. In the ongoing process the canes are crushed using a machine to extract the juice then they purify it using limestone filter. At fifth step, the juice is heated and use the process of evaporator to convert juice into syrup. At second last step, they use centrifuge process to separate sugar crystals from syrup and at the very last stage they dry and cool it to make sugar.

It is a very arduous and also a time consuming process but they make sugar from it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from growing the cane through to drying and cooling, and correctly include the 12–18-month growing period, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation and centrifuging. The overview identifies seven stages, giving the reader a useful summary of the process. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise: harvesting is described only as manual, although the diagram shows both hand harvesting and a mechanical harvester, and the crusher’s output of juice could be stated more clearly. The final comment that the process is “arduous” is an unsupported evaluation rather than a feature shown in the diagram. To strengthen the report, describe both harvesting methods and focus the overview on the process’s sequence and transformation from cane to sugar.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing phrases such as “After that,” “At fifth step,” and “at the very last stage” help the reader follow the process. However, the main process is compressed into one long paragraph, and some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “then send it to a machine” does not specify the crushing stage, while “In the ongoing process” is a vague transition. The final sentence repeats the idea that the process is time-consuming without adding information. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and stage-by-stage description, and connect each stage more precisely to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “extract the juice,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the stages understandable. There are also attempts at less common descriptive language, such as “arduous,” though this is an unnecessary judgement in an objective process report. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “manufacturing process of making” is redundant, “use the process of evaporator” is unnatural, and “ongoing process” is vague. Prefer concise, precise process language, such as “the juice is evaporated to form syrup.” Avoid repeating “time consuming” and use terminology that describes what the diagram shows rather than evaluating the work.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors remain. The overview needs a relative clause or linking verb: “a hard process consists of” should be “a demanding process that consists of.” In “At first stage it takes,” an article is needed (“At the first stage”), and “the juice is heated and use the process” has faulty parallel structure and verb form; write “the juice is heated and processed in an evaporator.” There are also awkward shifts between active and passive constructions, such as “they harvest it” followed by “the canes are crushed.” More consistent passive forms would suit a process description. Check articles, verb forms and sentence punctuation while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
