The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided diagram illustrates the multi-stage manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane, consisting of seven main steps, beginning with growing sugar canes and culminating in the drying and cooling the sugar.
Overall, the process is linear and involves a series of mechanical and chemical treatments, transitioning from raw agricultural inputs through various processing stages to the final output.
Looking at the first part of the process, the procedure commences with growing the sugar canes, following the initial stage, the crops are harvested in two ways such as, manually by hand and automatically through tractor. Next step is crushing the sugar canes to extract juice.
Turning to the final stages, the semi-processed material is subsequently, using limestone filter to purifying the juice. Once this process is completed the product undergoes to Evaporator to make a syrup from juice by flaming it. following these last steps the next step is separates sugar crystal from syrup in centrifuge. Drying and cooling the sugar before it is finally ready for the use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the process as seven stages, gives a clear overall summary from growing cane to the final drying and cooling, and includes the two harvesting methods and the main processing steps. These details match the diagram. The account is relevant throughout, but some stages are less fully described: for example, it does not explain that the limestone filter purifies the juice, and the centrifuge’s role in separating sugar crystals from syrup is only briefly stated. The overview also calls the process “mechanical and chemical treatments,” which is broad rather than a precise summary of the sequence. To strengthen the response, describe the key transformation at each stage and make the overview more specific about how cane becomes sugar.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by the early and later stages in sequence. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Next step,” and “Turning to the final stages” help guide the reader through the process. However, some connections are awkward or mechanical, particularly “following the initial stage” and “following these last steps,” and the final sentence is detached from the preceding account. The paragraphing is also limited, with the process details crowded into two long sections. Use clearer stage-to-stage links and group the growing and harvesting stages separately from the processing stages; this would make the progression more consistently smooth and the relationships between steps clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is adequate process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushing,” “extract juice,” “limestone filter,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge.” The writer also attempts more formal wording such as “culminating” and “semi-processed material,” showing some range. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “automatically through tractor” is not a natural description of mechanical harvesting, “by flaming it” is an inaccurate collocation for applying heat, and “ready for the use” is awkward. “Sugar crystal” should also be plural when referring to the product. Aim for precise process collocations, such as “mechanically,” “heated to form syrup,” and “ready for use,” while avoiding unnecessarily vague phrases like “semi-processed material.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and complex structures, including “Overall, the process is linear and involves…” and “Once this process is completed…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some errors in sentence construction and verb forms remain. For example, “the procedure commences with growing the sugar canes, following the initial stage, the crops are harvested” joins clauses incorrectly; “the product undergoes to Evaporator” has an incorrect verb pattern; and “the next step is separates” uses an incorrect infinitive form. The final fragment, “Drying and cooling the sugar before it is finally ready…,” also lacks a main clause. Use complete sentences with controlled sequencing, such as “The juice is then purified before being heated in an evaporator,” and check verb patterns and punctuation.
