How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram depicts the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the production of sugar from sugar cane contains sevral steps staring with growing sugar cane and ending with dryning and colling of sugar in the containers.

Initially, the sugar canes are planted in the farm whitch will take 12 to 18 months of time to grow. Then after, it can be cultivated through two diffrent methods by tractor or by hand. After that the sugar canes will crused in the matchine and converted into juice.

Subsiquently, the juice obtained from the sugar canes will be filtered by limestone filter. The juice will then heated to create syrup, and then it will be centrifuge in order to separate sugar crystalis from syrup. Lastly, the obtained sugar will dryed and cooled in the containers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, filtering, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. Your overview identifies the process’s beginning and end, and you correctly mention the two harvesting methods and the separation of sugar crystals from syrup. However, the response is 127 words, below the required 150; the nine words copied from the task prompt are excluded from that count. Some stages are also under-described: for example, you could clarify that heating turns the juice into syrup and that the final product is sugar. Add a little more precise detail while keeping the account focused on the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After that,” “Subsequently,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the process. The overall progression is coherent, although the linking can feel mechanical because most stages are introduced with a time marker. “Then after” is also redundant, and the transition from harvesting to crushing could be made more smoothly. To strengthen the organisation, group related stages into a more connected description and use a wider range of references, such as “the resulting juice” or “this syrup,” so that each sentence links naturally to the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “limestone filter,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which allows you to describe the diagram’s key operations. However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “sevral,” “staring,” “dryning,” “colling,” and “crystalis.” Some word choices and collocations are also inaccurate: “planted in the farm” and “cultivated through two different methods” are less natural for this process, while “in the containers” adds a detail not clearly shown. Aim for accurate process language and check spelling carefully. More precise verbs such as “is harvested,” “is crushed,” and “is separated” would also help make the description sound more appropriate to an academic process report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the sugar canes are planted … which will take 12 to 18 months” and a purpose clause in “in order to separate sugar crystals from syrup.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the juice will then heated” needs “will then be heated,” and “the obtained sugar will dryed and cooled” needs “will be dried and cooled.” The sentence about planting also has an unclear “which” reference, and “Then after” is an awkward construction. Practise consistent passive forms, which are especially useful for describing processes, and check auxiliary verbs and clause links when editing.
