IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram demonstrates the manufacturing process of how sugar is produced from sugar cane.
Overall, the manufacturing process consists of total seven stages. The process begins with plantation of sugar canes for a certain period followed by harvesting, crushing and so on. The process ends with the production of dry sugar.
Looking in the diadram in details, it is clear that initially sugar canes are grown in land for around 12 to 18 months. Next these canes are harvesting with the help of harvest machines. Then they are carried into another machine in order to crush them for the purpose of draining juice. Afterwards, juice liquid is poured into limestone filter to clean all impurities from it.
In the next step, fresh and purifying juice is put on stove within a cylinder for heat when evaporation came out of cylinder juice is converted into syrup.Following this the syrup is carried into centrifuge to separate sugar ingredients from syrup. Eventually, the prepared sugar is kept in a container to dry and cool it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the full sequence and give a clear overview that the process has seven stages, starts with growing cane and ends with dry sugar. The 12–18-month growing period, crushing for juice, limestone filtration, evaporation into syrup, and centrifuging are all relevant details. This meets the task well, while the overview and some stages could be more precise to show the full range of key features. In particular, the diagram presents both mechanical and manual harvesting, but you mention only machines. Also, “fresh and purifying juice” and “sugar ingredients” do not clearly describe the stages: the juice is purified before heating, and the centrifuge separates sugar crystals from syrup. Include these distinctions for a more complete account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages, and the sequence is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Next,” “Afterwards,” “In the next step,” and “Eventually” help guide the reader through the process. This clear progression is a strength. Some connections are less smooth because punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, for example “machines. Then” and “syrup.Following this.” The phrase “and so on” is also vague in a process description, where the remaining stages should be named directly. Use paragraph breaks and punctuation consistently, and rely on precise stage-to-stage links rather than general wording.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the topic clear. There is some range in how you describe the stages, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, limiting precision. For example, “harvesting with the help of harvest machines” is repetitive, “draining juice” is not the natural description of the crusher’s function, and “sugar ingredients” does not identify the crystals accurately. “Diadram” is also misspelled. Choose standard process terms and check spelling; more precise vocabulary will make the account sound clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including sequencing clauses such as “Next these canes…” and “Following this the syrup…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, articles and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For instance, “these canes are harvesting” should use a passive form, and “consists of total seven stages” needs an article or a different construction. The sentence beginning “when evaporation came out of cylinder” is difficult to follow because its clause structure and tense are faulty. There are also missing spaces after full stops and commas after introductory transitions. Practise accurate passive forms and divide longer process sentences into clear clauses.
