IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram summerises the steps involved in manufacturing sugar from sugarcane.
Overall, it is evident that this process consists of seven major stages, beginning with growing the crop and ending with drying and cooling the sugar. The intermediate stages involve harvesting, crushing, purifying the juice, evaporator, and centrifuge.
The process begins by growing the sugar cane crops for whole 12-18 months, then harvest the crops manually or by machinary. Third step is to crush these freshly harvested sugan canes to extract its juice. In further step, this juice undergoes purification process using a limestone filter.
The fifth step is to evaporator, the juice is constantly heated it to obtain syrup from the sugar cane juice. In the subsequent stage, the syrup is processed in a centrifuge, where the sugar crystals are separated from the remaining liquid. The final step is to drying and cooling of sugar in large containers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear account of the process and includes its key stages, from growing sugar cane for 12–18 months to drying and cooling the final sugar. The overview correctly identifies the seven-stage sequence and the beginning and end points, while the body explains the main transformations, including juice extraction, limestone filtration, heating to form syrup, and separation of sugar crystals in a centrifuge. The two harvesting methods are also noted. To make the account more fully developed, describe the final drying and cooling stage more precisely: the diagram shows the sugar being dried and cooled, but does not specify that this happens in “large containers.” Also, present the evaporator as equipment used to heat the juice, rather than as a process stage in itself.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear sequence, with an overview followed by two paragraphs that move through the early and later stages. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “The process begins,” “In further step,” and “In the subsequent stage” help the reader follow the process. The progression is logical and the stages are not confused. Some transitions, however, feel formulaic, and the final paragraph contains several stages in quick succession. You could improve the flow by using more varied links that show cause or transformation—for example, explaining that heating turns the juice into syrup before it is sent to the centrifuge. Clearer sentence connections would make the description feel more cohesive without changing its effective overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “extract,” “purification,” “limestone filter,” “centrifuge,” and “separated.” These terms communicate the main stages accurately, and the writer attempts more specific language such as “freshly harvested.” However, some word choices and forms are inaccurate or awkward: “summerises” is misspelled, “sugan canes” contains a spelling error, and “the process begins by growing the sugar cane crops” is less natural than “sugar cane is grown.” “The fifth step is to evaporator” also uses the equipment name incorrectly. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling, especially for key terms, so the vocabulary remains precise throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the sequence is generally understandable. The overview uses a clear participial structure in “beginning with growing the crop and ending with drying and cooling the sugar,” while the centrifuge sentence successfully explains how crystals are separated from liquid. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “then harvest the crops” does not maintain the passive construction used for the crop-growing stage, and “The fifth step is to evaporator” has an incorrect infinitive pattern. In “the juice is constantly heated it to obtain syrup,” the sentence contains an unnecessary object pronoun and needs clearer punctuation or restructuring. Practise consistent passive forms and check verb patterns when describing each stage.
