How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given flowchart illustrates the manufacturing of sugar from sugar cane by using seven strategies such as plantation of sugar cane, harvesting, crushing, filteration, evaporator, centrifuge, and last one is drying and cooling.

Overall, it starts from growing of sugar cane which takes 12-18 month. This ends at the drying and cooling by go through from several steps.

The plantation of sugar cane take 12-18 months for growing. When the plant reaches at their specific position, it will harvest by either machineries or by humans. After harvesting, the sugar cane has sent to crushing machine for the gaining of juice. The juice will be purified by the utilization of limestone filter.

This liquid will be go for boiling by using evaporator. It transforms the liquid into syrup. The centrifuge(used for seperation of sugar crystals from syrup) has crucial role in the manufacturing of sugar. It clears out the crystals from the liquid. At the last, it goes for drying and cooling and after some time the sugar will be in our hand.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full process in the correct order, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview identifies the start and end points, and you accurately note the two harvesting methods and that evaporation turns juice into syrup. These details meet the task well. To make the account more complete and precise, develop the overview beyond the endpoints by summarising the transformation from cane to juice, then syrup, and finally sugar crystals. Some descriptions are unclear or imprecise, such as “specific position” and “after some time the sugar will be in our hand”; focus instead on the diagram’s observable stages and avoid adding an unsupported implication about when the sugar is ready for use.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages in sequence. The progression from growing and harvesting to processing is easy to follow, and phrases such as “After harvesting” and “At the last” help signal order. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly “This liquid will be go for boiling,” and the overview repeats the growing period already mentioned in the body. The final paragraph also combines evaporation, centrifuging, and the final stage without a particularly smooth transition. Use concise stage-to-stage links and avoid repeating information so that the progression feels more controlled and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which allows you to describe the main stages. Some less common terms are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “seven strategies” does not describe process stages, “plantation” is not the best term for growing cane, and “clears out the crystals” is imprecise. There are also spelling errors in “filteration” and “seperation.” Choose standard process language and check spelling; for example, describe the cane as being “grown,” the juice as “filtered,” and the centrifuge as “separating” crystals from syrup. This would improve precision while retaining your useful technical vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “the centrifuge (used for separation of sugar crystals from syrup)” and a passive construction for harvesting. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence patterns are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. Examples include “The plantation … take 12–18 months,” “it will harvest,” and “This liquid will be go for boiling.” The opening sentence also has an unclear construction around “by using seven strategies.” Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the cane is harvested” and “the juice is heated,” and check subject–verb agreement and verb forms. More reliable control of these patterns would make the sequence clearer.
