The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
This process involves seven important steps starting from growing sugar cane than harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporating, done centrifuge and finally drying and cooling.
First step in this process is growing sugar canes this growing process takes 12 to 18 months. When sugar canes fully grown than next step of harvesting takes palce. This can be done through 2 different ways either by hand or by machine. After this crushing of sugar canes done through machine and juice is obtained. Than purifying of juice is done with the help of limestone filter. After this, purified juice is taken to the evaporator where juice is heated and juice becomes syrup. Than the centrifugation of syrup is done which separates sugar crystals from syrup. Finally the drying and cooling of these crytals which are obtained as a result of centrifugation is done thus sugar is obtained and ready to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the full sequence and include the key timing detail that sugar cane grows for 12–18 months. You also accurately describe the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, heating to form syrup, separation in the centrifuge, and final drying and cooling. The overview identifies seven stages, which helps the reader understand the process as a whole. Some details are less fully explained: for example, the final stage is described as drying and cooling the crystals, but the diagram’s output is simply labelled sugar. A clearer overview of the process’s main transformation—from cane to juice, syrup, and sugar—would make the key features more prominent.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in the correct order, and sequencing expressions such as “First step,” “After this,” “Finally,” and “which separates” make the process easy to follow overall. The opening also gives a useful summary of the seven steps. However, most of the response is placed in one paragraph, and the repeated use of “Than” and “After this” makes the linking somewhat mechanical. Some references are also unclear, as in “these crystals which are obtained as a result of centrifugation,” where the sentence becomes crowded. Grouping the overview separately from the detailed stages and varying the transitions would create clearer progression and smoother cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifugation,” so the reader can understand the main operations. There is also some useful variation in describing the stages. However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “done centrifuge” and “the drying and cooling of these crystals … is done.” Spelling errors in “palce” and “crytals” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural process collocations and concise verbs rather than repeatedly using “done.” For example, say that the syrup “is centrifuged” and the crystals “are dried and cooled.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which separates sugar crystals from syrup.” The sequence remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. However, errors occur in several sentence patterns: “starting from growing sugar cane than harvesting” has faulty construction, while “When sugar canes fully grown than next step … takes palce” lacks a correctly formed clause. There are also problems with articles and agreement in “First step in this process” and “the drying and cooling … is done.” Use complete clauses with consistent tense, for example, “Once the cane has fully grown, it is harvested,” and check singular/plural agreement when describing the crystals.
