IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrate the procees of making sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the process of making sugar consist of several stages. beginning with growing sugar cane and ending with sugar particles are placed in dry and colling place.
According to early stages firstly sugarcane are growing the process of grown taken from 12 to 18 months. when sugarcane are matured then harvested with the help of harveting machine. After put harvested sugarcane into crushing machine and extract the juice.
In the reamaining stages the extracted juice put into limestone filter which purify the juice. After this process the juice transferred the evaporator which provide heat and convert into syrup. After this syrup sent the centrifuger which separates sugar crystals from syrup. finally the sugar is ready and palced into drying and cooling place.
sugarcane after passing these process then convert into sugar form.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, filtering, evaporation and centrifuging to drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the process’s beginning and end, and you correctly explain that heating turns the juice into syrup and that the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup. This gives the response a solid account of the diagram. However, some details are less fully reported: harvesting can be done mechanically or by hand, but you mention only a machine, and the final stage is described awkwardly as a place where sugar is put rather than a drying-and-cooling process. A more precise overview and fuller coverage of these details would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early and later stages, with sequencing words such as “firstly,” “After this process,” and “finally” helping the reader follow the process. The stages are generally presented in the right order. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “After put harvested sugarcane into crushing machine,” and the final sentence repeats the idea that the cane becomes sugar without adding a new stage. Paragraphing is present, but the division into “According to early stages” and “In the reamaining stages” is not fully natural. Use clearer transitions and avoid repeating information to make progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushing machine,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuger,” so the reader can identify most stages. There are also attempts at more specific terms such as “sugar crystals” and “syrup.” However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word choices are noticeable: “procees,” “harveting,” and “colling” are misspelled, while “dry and colling place” does not accurately describe the final stage. “Sugar particles” is also less precise than “sugar crystals.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing standard process collocations, such as “is dried and cooled” and “the juice is purified.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview clause “beginning with growing sugar cane and ending with…” and the sequence explaining that the centrifuge separates crystals from syrup. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. For example, “the process of making sugar consist” needs subject–verb agreement, while “the extracted juice put into limestone filter” is missing an auxiliary verb and articles. Several stages are expressed as fragments or incomplete patterns, such as “After put harvested sugarcane into crushing machine.” These errors sometimes make relationships between actions unclear. Practise complete passive constructions for process descriptions, for example, “The juice is filtered before it is heated,” and check agreement, articles and tense.
