IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrate the various process which is used in the production of sugar from the sugar cane . Overall the process include 7 different stages which are growing of the crop , harvesting on the field , crushing of the sugarcane , purification , evaporation , sepration and drying of the produce product .
The procedure starts with the crop of the sugarcane which almost take 12-18 months to be harvested from the irrigated land . Later it is shift in the crushing zone where sugarcane is crushed to form the juice and it is pass through the limestone filter to clear the impurities . The purified liquid is transfer into the reactor where it is heated at high temperature to convert it in the syrup . Sepration of sugar crystal from the syrup is done in the centrifuge chamber .Next the sugar crystal is settled in the drying column for the cooling process .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You give a relevant account of the process and identify its overall sequence, including the seven stages from growing through to drying. You also include the stated growing period and explain the key transformations from cane to juice, then syrup and sugar crystals. This covers the main features, but some stages are less fully reported: the two harvesting methods are omitted, and the final drying and cooling stage is described only briefly. A few details are not supported by the diagram, such as “irrigated land,” a “reactor,” and the sugar crystals “settled” in a column. For a fuller and more precise summary, report the harvesting alternatives and describe the equipment and outputs using only information shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression: an opening summary is followed by a description of the stages in sequence, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Later,” and “Next” help the reader follow the process. This coherent arrangement meets the task well. However, the overview and body are compressed into two long paragraphs, and the second paragraph contains nearly every stage, making the sequence harder to scan. Some links are also mechanical, while “Next” is attached directly to the preceding sentence without a space. To strengthen the organisation, use a distinct overview paragraph and group the stages into logical phases, such as harvesting and juice preparation, followed by processing and finishing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “syrup,” “sugar crystal,” and “centrifuge,” which allows the reader to understand the main stages. There is also some variety in how you describe the transformations. However, several word choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram: “reactor” is not the equipment label shown, “irrigated land” adds an unsupported detail, and “settled in the drying column” does not clearly describe drying and cooling. Spelling errors such as “sepration” and “sugarcane” (used inconsistently) also reduce precision. Aim for accurate process collocations and use the diagram’s labels where possible, such as “evaporator” and “drying and cooling.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which almost take 12-18 months” and a sequence of linked process clauses. The meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, and “the process include” should also take a singular verb. There are article and verb-form problems in “it is shift” and “it is pass,” while “The purified liquid is transfer” needs a past participle. Sentence boundaries and spacing also need attention, particularly “chamber .Next.” Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and check agreement, articles, and punctuation during revision.
