IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration below gives us information about the manufacturing method for making sugar from sugar cane. Overall, the process is started from growing the field of sugar cane and ends up on drying and cooling process of sugar.
Firstly, growing the sugar can takes 12-18 months and after this whole period when suagr cane is ready harvesting is started. Besides this, after cutting large machines are used to carry the sugar can to towards crushing point. At this point crushing machine is used and from the upward side sugar canes are inserted inside and from the down side juice comes out after crushing process completes.
Secondly, the method of purifying juice is started with the use of limestone filter. Moreover, the evaporator begins in which juice becomes in the form of syrup with the help of heat. In addition, centrifuge starts where sugar crystals are separated from syrup. Furthermore, on the last stage sugar drying and cooling was done.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing the cane for 12–18 months through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. Your overview identifies the process’s beginning and end, and details such as the limestone filter and heat are relevant. This meets the task well, although some features are less fully reported: the diagram shows harvesting by both machine and hand, but you mention only large machines, and the centrifuge’s role is described without explaining that it separates crystals from the remaining syrup. For a stronger account, include both harvesting methods and make the separation and final product more explicit in the overview and stage descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence and is divided into an opening overview followed by stages introduced with “Firstly” and “Secondly.” The reader can follow the process from cultivation to the final treatment, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help signal progression. However, the repeated additive transitions make the later stages sound like a list rather than a smoothly connected process, and the first paragraph combines several stages in a long stretch. Grouping the stages into clearer paragraphs and using more precise links—such as “After harvesting” or “Once the juice has been purified”—would improve flow. The reference in “after this whole period” is also somewhat vague.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” so the stages are generally identifiable. There is some useful variation in how you describe the process, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “manufacturing method,” “growing the field,” “carry the sugar can to towards crushing point,” and “sugar drying and cooling was done.” Spelling slips in “suagr” and “sugar can” also reduce precision. Aim for standard process language and accurate forms—for example, “the cane is grown,” “transported to the crusher,” and “the sugar is dried and cooled.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the clause beginning “when sugar cane is ready,” and the sequence is usually understandable. However, control is uneven: “the process is started from growing” and “ends up on drying” use faulty grammatical patterns, while “sugar drying and cooling was done” has an awkward passive construction and agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Besides this, after cutting…” also becomes difficult to follow because several actions are joined together. Use consistent present simple passive forms for a process, such as “The cane is harvested,” “the juice is purified,” and “the sugar is dried and cooled,” and check articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries.
