IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the differents stages to produce sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the process involve seven stages to manufacture sugar. Initially from harvesting sugar canes to extracting juice by crushing and later purifying to make sugar syrup. Furthermore, to obtain in final crystal form, centrifuge method is peformed.
Firstly, sugar canes requires 12 to 18 months to be ready for harvesting which is later harvested either by using machines or human manpower. Secondly, sugar canes are put in a crushing machine to extract juice. The obtain juices are put in a Limestone filter that purifys foreign bodies from it.
In the fifth stage, filtered sugar cane juice goes through the process of evaporation where syrup is left out in the container. The syrup is then taken for centrifugation such that small crystal is formed. At final stage, seperated sugar crystals are put in a container for drying and cooling, where sugar is manufactured.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers the main sequence and gives a clear overview that sugar production involves seven stages, from growing and harvesting to processing and final drying and cooling. It also accurately reports the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation and centrifugation. This meets the task well, with some detail beyond a basic account. However, a few descriptions are imprecise: the overview says “extracting juice by crushing and later purifying to make sugar syrup,” which compresses distinct stages, and “small crystal is formed” does not clearly explain that the centrifuge separates sugar crystals from syrup. Clarifying this separation and describing the final product more precisely would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a sensible order, with an overview followed by a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “In the fifth stage,” and “At final stage” help the reader follow the process. The overall progression is coherent, but the linking can feel mechanical, and some connections between stages are compressed. For example, the overview moves quickly from crushing to purification and syrup production without clearly distinguishing the intervening steps. The final sentence also combines separation, drying and cooling in a way that makes the sequence less clear. Use paragraphing to separate the overview from the detailed stages, and rely more on clear stage-to-stage links rather than repeated ordinal markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “Limestone filter,” “evaporation,” “centrifugation,” and “drying and cooling.” These terms make the subject clear, and the writer attempts more specific language such as “foreign bodies.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “differents stages,” “human manpower,” “obtain juices,” and “syrup is left out” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “peformed,” “purifys,” and “seperated” also reduce accuracy. Prefer standard process collocations—for example, “the juice is filtered to remove impurities” and “the syrup is processed in a centrifuge”—and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple sentences and some more complex structures, including “which is later harvested either by using machines or human manpower” and “such that small crystal is formed.” The stages remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries. For instance, “sugar canes requires” should use a plural verb, while “the process involve seven stages” also needs subject–verb agreement. “At final stage” requires an article, and the missing space after “formed.” creates a punctuation problem. The overview’s opening fragment, “Initially from harvesting sugar canes…,” is also not a complete sentence. Build accuracy by checking each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb, and use complex clauses only when their structure is controlled.
