IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram shows the process of sugar production fom sugar cane.
The process of making sugar go through from 7 steps and then it converts sugar cane into sugar.
Sugar cane contains 12 to 18 months in the growing after cultivation the it go through a process of harvasting which have 2 types, harvasting process can be conduct by hands and machine also. After that it face the crushing in which sugar cane become a juice with the help of machine.then juice purify by using limestone filter which filters juice from extra particles.
Moreover, this juice is put on heat in a cylinderical shape pot which make it a syrup like fluid by evaporation. After making cyrup from juice , the process of centrifuge occur in which sugar partical is removing from syrup. In the last process of converting sugar cane into sugar, the sugar particles taken from syrup is drying and cooling .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence of seven stages and include the growing period, both harvesting methods, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. This covers the main stages, and the description that juice becomes syrup before sugar is separated is relevant. However, the overview is vague and partly inaccurate: “it converts sugar cane into sugar” does not clearly summarise the key transformation, and the opening overview does not identify the process as linear. Some details are also unclear or unsupported, such as saying the filter removes “extra particles.” To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the start and end points and describe the purpose of each stage precisely, especially the separation of crystals from syrup.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and the paragraph beginning “Moreover” signals the move from purification to the later stages. The reader can follow the broad process from cane to finished sugar. However, the response has only limited paragraphing, and the first two sentences repeat the general idea of sugar production rather than establishing a clear overview. Some links are awkward or mechanical, including “After that” and “In the last process,” while the long third sentence joins several stages without clear boundaries. Organise the response into an introduction and overview, followed by two logically grouped stage descriptions. Use clear transitions and punctuation so each stage connects smoothly to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” and “centrifuge,” which helps communicate the sequence. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “syrup” and “sugar particles.” However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural choices are noticeable: “fom,” “harvasting,” “cyrup,” and “cylindrical shape pot” reduce accuracy, while “sugar partical is removing” is difficult to interpret. Some phrases are repetitive, particularly repeated references to “the process.” Check spelling carefully and choose standard process collocations, such as “the cane is crushed” and “crystals are separated from the syrup,” to make the description more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and longer sentences, including a relative clause in “a process of harvesting which have 2 types” and a sequence of clauses describing evaporation and centrifuging. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to follow. Examples include “The process … go through from 7 steps,” “Sugar cane contains 12 to 18 months in the growing,” and “sugar partical is removing.” These show problems with subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. Punctuation also needs attention: “machine.then” runs sentences together, and “Moreover, this” lacks a space. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “the cane is harvested” and “the crystals are dried and cooled.”
