IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how sugar is formed from sugar cane through various stages.
Overall, the procedure begins with mature sugar canes, after several processes juice is obtained. This juice undergo different stages, by drying and cooling at the end it becomes sugar.
Firstly, sugar canes are planting. After 12-18 month of growing stage, they become mature. Sugar cane are harvested. There are two methods of harvesting either by mechanical or hand harvesting. Then, sugar canes are crushed and juice is obtained. This juice contaminated several impurities. Limestone filter is used to purify the juice. The purifying juice is heated in evaporator and it becomes syrup. The syrup is passed in centrifugal machine for centrifugation. In this process, the machine rotated at high speed and sugar crystals are seperated from syrup. Firstly, these sugar crystals are dried in heat and then passed in a cooler for cooling. Finally sugar is obtained following these processes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct order, including the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. Your overview identifies the start and end of the process, and the account of the centrifuge correctly notes that sugar crystals are separated from syrup. Some details are less fully or precisely reported: the overview says juice is obtained only after several processes, although crushing produces it, and the final stages are described as drying in heat and then cooling rather than as the diagram’s combined drying-and-cooling stage. The claim that the juice contains impurities is a reasonable explanation of purification, but is not explicitly shown. A clearer overview of the full transformation from cane to crystals would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression and uses a sensible sequence, moving from cultivation through processing to the finished sugar. The opening overview and the subsequent “Firstly” and “Finally” markers help the reader follow the process, and the stages are generally grouped in a logical order. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical and repetitive: “Firstly” is used again near the end, and several short statements are joined mainly by “Then” or “and.” The overview’s sequence is also slightly unclear because it suggests juice is obtained after several processes, while the body correctly places juice production at crushing. Use more precise references such as “the resulting juice” and vary transitions to make the connections smoother and the overview consistent with the detailed account.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “purify,” “evaporator,” “centrifugal machine,” and “sugar crystals.” These terms make the stages understandable, and some less common vocabulary is attempted. There are, however, several inaccurate forms or collocations that reduce precision: “sugar are planting” does not express the intended action naturally, “contaminated several impurities” is awkward, and “passed in a centrifugal machine” is not idiomatic. “Seperated” is also misspelled. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling, especially for technical terms. More precise wording for the final product and the separation stage would make the description sound more controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the explanation of what happens in the centrifuge. The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “sugar canes are planting” needs a passive form, while “This juice undergo different stages” has a subject–verb agreement error. “After 12-18 month of growing stage” also needs plural and article adjustments, and “the machine rotated” uses an unsuitable tense for a general process. Review passive constructions, since they are especially useful for process diagrams, and keep the present simple consistent. More accurate control of these patterns would improve clarity while preserving your range of sentence structures.
