IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram illustrates how sugar is produced from sugarcane.
Overall, it is clearly seen that it takes seven steps to produce sugar from sugarcane. It started from growing the sugarcanes and ended with dryinng and cooling.
In the first step, sugarcanes are grown which takes 12-18 months. In addition, in the second step, the matured sugarcanes are harvested. Therefore, the harvesting can be done in two ways, one is manually and another one is mechanically. Moreover, in the next step, the harvested sugarcanes are crushed and the juice comes out.
Then in the fourth step, the juice is purified through limestone filter. After that, the juice is putted into the evaporator and heat is provided which helps to covert the juice into syrup. In the sixth step, the sugar crystals are separated from sugar by centifuge. Finally, in the last step, the sugar is dried and cooled down. This is how sugar is formed from sugarcanes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the full sequence and include key details such as the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, purification through limestone, and the final drying and cooling. The overview also identifies the seven stages and the process’s start and end, giving the reader a clear summary. This meets the task well, with some features already clearly selected and reported. However, a few details are less precise: “the sugar crystals are separated from sugar” misstates the centrifuge stage, which separates crystals from syrup, and “matured” is an inference rather than a label shown in the diagram. To make the account more complete and precise, describe the syrup stage explicitly and report the separation accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response follows the diagram’s order from growing through to drying and cooling, and the paragraphing separates the overview from the stage-by-stage account. Linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” “After that,” and “Finally” help signal progression, so the process is easy to follow. The organisation is clear throughout. Some transitions, however, feel formulaic because nearly every stage is introduced with a numbered phrase or connector. “Therefore” does not express a clear cause-and-effect relationship in the harvesting sentence. You could improve flexibility by grouping related stages into broader phases and using more direct links, while keeping the sequence explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “purified,” “evaporator,” and “sugar crystals,” which makes the main operations understandable. There are also some attempts at more specific wording, such as “limestone filter.” However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “putted” is not the correct form, “covert” appears where “convert” is intended, and “centifuge” is misspelled. “Sugar is formed” is also less precise than language describing the production process. Aim to check technical terms and use accurate collocations, for example, “the juice is fed into an evaporator” and “crystals are separated from the syrup.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the relative clause in “which takes 12-18 months” and the clause explaining that heat helps change the juice into syrup. Most relationships between stages remain clear despite some grammatical errors. There are issues with verb forms and sentence construction, however: “It started from growing” is awkwardly formed, and “the juice is putted into the evaporator” uses an incorrect past participle. The phrase “one is manually and another one is mechanically” also lacks parallel grammatical forms; use “one is manual and the other is mechanical,” or describe both as adverbs. Continue varying sentence patterns, while checking passive forms and ensuring parallel structures.
