How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of refined sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the process consists of seven steps, starting with growing the sugar canes, which takes up to 18 months and followed by harvesting, crushing, purifying the juice, evaporation, centrifugation and ending with drying and cooling of the sugar.

Firstly, the process begins with cultivating sugar canes which takes 12 to 18 months. Then it moves forward with harvesting farmers picke the mature sugar canes and cut them. later, the cane is crushed. the sugar cane is put inside from the tip of the machine which consist of the wheels on both sides of the device crush it crushes it and the juice flows out from the bottom.

Secondly, they use a limestone filter the juice is purified using a limestone filter and then transferred to a large container, where it is heated to evaporate the water The centrifugation process then begins that separates sugar crystals from syrup, Lastly, the refined sugar is dried and cooled.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overview of the seven-stage sequence, from cane cultivation to drying and cooling, and correctly include the 12–18-month growing period. Most key stages are covered, including crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation and centrifugation. However, some details are incomplete or imprecise: the harvesting stage is described as farmers cutting the cane, but the diagram shows both mechanical and manual harvesting. The account of crushing adds unsupported detail about the cane entering “from the tip” and wheels on both sides, while the evaporation stage could state more clearly that heating turns the juice into syrup. To develop the report further, describe the main transformations accurately and avoid details that are not clearly shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing the process in sequence. The stages are generally easy to follow, and words such as “Firstly,” “Then” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, “Overall” is followed by a long list that partly repeats the body, and “Secondly” does not clearly mark a new stage in the process. Several transitions are awkward or run together, particularly the passage beginning “Secondly, they use a limestone filter,” where purification, heating and centrifugation are packed into one sentence. Use paragraphing to group the early stages and later processing, and connect each stage with clear, consistent transitions and punctuation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivating,” “limestone filter,” “evaporate,” “centrifugation” and “sugar crystals.” These terms make the subject clear and show some ability to use less common language. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “moves forward with harvesting” is an awkward collocation, and “the cane is crushed” is less precise than describing the machine crushing it. “Refined sugar” is understandable, but the diagram simply labels the final product as sugar. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “picke,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise verbs and natural process collocations, and proofread spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “which takes up to 18 months” and the relative clause describing the centrifuge. The sequence is usually understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or poorly controlled. For example, “which takes up to 18 months and followed by harvesting” lacks a parallel verb form; “Then it moves forward with harvesting farmers picke…” joins ideas without a clear grammatical boundary; and “the juice is purified … and then transferred … where it is heated” needs clearer sentence punctuation. Capitalisation and commas are also inconsistent. Build accuracy by checking that each sentence has a complete main clause, keeping verb forms parallel, and separating stages with full stops or well-formed conjunctions.
