How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given diagram demonstrates the information of making sugar from sugar cane.

Initially the sugar cane can seed takes 12 to 18 months for their proper growth after 18 months a perfect sugar cane grows then they start the process of harvesting by crushing sugar canes by machine and obtain sugar cane juice from machine however the next process is to filter the exctarcted juice through a purifying machine where limestone filter make it purified after this process the next procudre is to make syrup of purified juice in this step there is container which is directed by heat. When heat is provided to the container the juice in the container evaporates and juice become syup. In next step there is centrifuge machine which use for separting sugar crystals from syrup. All over the process it is main part of making sugar from sugar cane during this procedure centrigue machine separates the crystals of sugar and then the next process is to drying the crystals when the crystals are fully dried then cool it after all this process we obtain the sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main stages from growing sugar cane through processing to the final sugar, and you include the 12–18-month growing period, purification with limestone, heating, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. However, the account is only partially complete: it says harvesting is done “by crushing sugar canes by machine,” confusing two separate stages and omitting the diagram’s two harvesting methods (mechanical and manual). The overview is also unclear; “All over the process it is main part” does not summarise the process’s overall structure. Some details are imprecise, such as saying the cane is “seed[ed]” and describing the evaporator as a container rather than clearly stating that heat turns juice into syrup. A clearer overview and accurate stage-by-stage reporting would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the general order of production, using markers such as “Initially,” “after this process,” and “In next step,” so readers can recognise a sequence. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, and the progression becomes repetitive and difficult to follow, especially in the final section, where centrifuging and drying are described more than once. Several transitions are mechanically repeated, including “the next process” and “after all this process.” Some links between stages are unclear: harvesting is joined directly to crushing, making them sound like one operation. Organise the process into a brief overview and logically grouped stages, and use concise transitions that clarify how each stage leads to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “limestone filter,” “evaporates,” “syrup,” “centrifuge,” and “crystals,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning harder to understand. For example, “sugar cane can seed” is not a clear description of the growing stage, “exctarcted juice” is misspelled, and “centrigue machine” is an inaccurate spelling of “centrifuge.” Phrases such as “proper growth,” “perfect sugar cane,” and “make it purified” are also imprecise or unnatural for a process description. Build a more accurate set of process verbs and use standard spellings for the equipment and materials.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect several stages in longer sentences, but these structures are often faulty, and sentence boundaries are not controlled consistently. For instance, “Initially the sugar cane can seed takes 12 to 18 months for their proper growth after 18 months a perfect sugar cane grows” combines several ideas without clear punctuation and has problems with agreement and reference. In “the next process is to make syrup of purified juice in this step there is container,” the clauses run together and the article is missing. Verb forms and sentence patterns are also unreliable, as in “the next process is to drying the crystals” and “then cool it.” Use shorter, complete sentences first, checking articles, agreement, verb forms, and punctuation; then add a few accurately formed complex sentences.
