IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrate the 7 steps manufacturing technique of getting sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, this is time taking process from growing, harvesting, crushing till getting final product in the form of sugar.
Initially, growing is the step which almost take 12-18 months untill young sugar cane plant come in shape, then harvesting is done by different methods most commonly by automated harvesting machines and manually by human labor, collectively then these plants are crushed by machines to get juice product, which then is purified by limestone filters to be processed for final product.
Then, come the most valuable part from which this purified juice is heated by evaporator to get syrup, that is then centrifuged by centrifuge machine to shape this into sugar crystals. At the end of this lengthy process the stage come that is drying and cooling of this final sugar crystals in pots and then to be delivered to customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from the 12–18-month growing period through harvesting, crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. The overview identifies the process as a sequence ending in sugar, and you include the two harvesting methods and the key change from juice to syrup and then crystals. This gives a clear account of the diagram’s central features. Some details, however, go beyond or misstate the visual: it does not say the plants are young, that the sugar is delivered to customers, or that crystals are dried in pots. The overview could also more clearly summarise the process’s main transformations rather than calling it “time taking.” Keep the description strictly grounded in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an opening, an overview, and two paragraphs that follow the production stages. Linking expressions such as “Initially,” “Then,” and “At the end” help readers track the process, and the progression from cultivation to the final product is generally clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the long sentences in the body pack several stages together, making relationships between steps less easy to follow. “Then, come the most valuable part” is also an awkward transition, and “which” has an unclear reference in places. Use shorter stage-focused sentences and more precise links between each input and outcome.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushed,” “purified,” “evaporator,” “centrifuged,” and “crystals,” so the reader can understand the manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “automated harvesting machines” and “limestone filters.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “time taking process,” “most valuable part,” “to shape this into sugar crystals,” and “pots” do not describe the diagram precisely. “Manufacturing technique” is also less suitable than “manufacturing process.” These word-choice and collocation issues fit an adequate but not consistently precise range. Aim for standard process collocations and use the labels shown in the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a sequence joined with “which” and a concluding sentence beginning “At the end of this lengthy process.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but grammatical control is uneven, and several errors occur in basic sentence patterns. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “growing is the step which almost take” has agreement and clause-structure problems. In “young sugar cane plant come in shape,” the article, plural form, and verb form are not controlled. The long sentence beginning “Initially” also joins several stages without clear grammatical boundaries. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions and divide multi-stage sentences into shorter clauses; this will make your range easier to follow.
