IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The flow chart represented the information about how was sugar cane goes through servels process to produce sugar.
Overall, production of sugar have 7 steps of process in total. However few steps are complicated while some steps can be done by human or machine.
The first step of process is to grow sugar cane and harvest after 12 - 18 months. Furthermore harvesting of sugar cane can be done in 2 ways, first is by the farmer manualy and second is by harvesting machine called tractor. Collected sugar cane by harvesting goes through a crushing process that transfer sugar cane into juice. After exctrated juice from sugar cane it goes through fourth process that name purifying juice, a limestone filter is use to seprate liquide and solid particles from the juice.
After obtaining purifing juice, it converted into syrup by heating a container in which juice is stored and the methord called evaporator, after this sugar crystals seprated from syrup by a centrifuge process. At the last crystals of sugar is stored in large container to drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing and harvesting through crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and drying and cooling. The overview identifies seven stages and notes that harvesting can be done manually or mechanically, both important features of the diagram. Most process details are relevant, including the 12–18-month growing period and the separation of crystals from syrup. Some descriptions are less precise: the diagram shows sugar cane being crushed to extract juice, but “transfer sugar cane into juice” is unclear, and the final stage is drying and cooling the sugar, rather than storing it “to drying and cooling.” To strengthen the response, describe each transformation accurately and make the overview capture the overall progression from cane to finished sugar.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by the early and later stages of production. Sequencing expressions such as “The first step,” “After,” and “At the last” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraph break separates the overview from the details. However, the long final two paragraphs contain several stages joined together, so the progression can feel compressed. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “After exctrated juice from sugar cane it goes through fourth process,” where the reference of “it” is uncertain. Use shorter, clearly structured sentences and refer explicitly to the juice, syrup, or crystals at each transition. This would make the already logical organisation smoother and less dependent on repetitive sequencing phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which allows you to report the main stages. There is also some useful variation in describing the two harvesting methods. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “servels,” “manualy,” “exctrated,” “seprate,” and “methord.” Some combinations are imprecise or unnatural: “transfer sugar cane into juice” and “stored to drying and cooling” do not clearly express the process. Aim for accurate forms and natural collocations, such as “extract juice from the cane” and “the crystals are dried and cooled.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence construction, verb forms, and articles occur often enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “how was sugar cane goes through” has an incorrect question-like word order and verb form; “production of sugar have 7 steps” has subject–verb disagreement; and “it converted into syrup” is missing an auxiliary verb. The sentence beginning “After exctrated juice…” is also structurally incomplete. Practise forming accurate passive constructions for processes, such as “the juice is purified” and “the syrup is heated,” and check agreement and articles. More reliable sentence patterns will help you express the stages clearly while retaining some structural variety.
